Do you have one?

Do you have two? Several?

Do you keep trying hobbies, getting bored, then starting new ones?

Are you one of those people who decide on a hobby, go at it full tilt, read all the stuff you can, learn everything about it, buy all the latest equipment, set everything up only to discover that you suck at it or don't like it or both, so you scrap that idea and start the cycle all over again with something different?

Do you have "interests" rather than hobbies?

Is your work your hobby?

Whatever it may be, tell Uncle Stui and the rest of the VPT all about it.

I'll start, I've had a few different ones over the years.

When I was a kid I liked to collect coins. Still got them all, reasonable collection, might even be worth some money one day but I lost interest in maintaining it a loooong time ago.

Brewing beer was fun, but doing all the frigging washing of bottles was a pain. I've considered restarting that hobby using kegs instead of bottles but I might keep that in the bank till I'm not working full time.

Doing stuff around the house is more of an interest than a hobby, gardening, painting and other home renos is stuff I like doing but only when I'm in the mood otherwise it's a chore.

Cooking is both a hobby and a chore. Having to knock something up because I'm hungry is a chore, deciding to look up a new recipe and cook something up just to see how it tastes is fun and a hobby.

I've listed one of my hobbies as Amateur Gynecologist before but for some reason that didn't go down too well. I mean seriously you'd think people who work at an all girls school would have more of a sense of humour when interviewing people for gardening jobs.

Coming on Nicks and alternating between making a cnut of myself, trying out my (potential) stand up comedy routine and occasionally being serious is more of a cathartic experience than a hobby. The unkind would suggest that they too feel my comedic contributions to be cathartic - when I stop.

So, others, what's the deal?

Does David really spend his leisure time gluing the pubic hair back on the strippers at the Mens Gallery?
5150 hiding in the trees outside Luvdids house with his binoculars and a tube of KY?
Swoop "breeding" goats?
DTM Yelling at umpires and downloading midget hentai porn?

Tell Unca Stui all about it.

Great thread, Stui. I have heaps of hobbies! They seem to come and go every few months. Just off the top of my head:

I used to collect coins for ages when I was a kid, and I still have them in my grandfather's old wooden cigar box. Like you, I lost interest in it ages ago.

I also used to collect little action figures! My "Corps" (second-rate GI Joe knock-off) collection was enviable.

I've always had a weird thing for geography, and once when I was young took it upon myself to list (and remember) every country in the world. Not satisfied with that, I decided to learn every country and its capital and occasionally refresh my memory by doing quizzes online. This is more of a "party trick" than a hobby (I know, it'd have to be a pretty dire party...), but even now if you say any country in the world and I can tell you what the capital is within seconds.

Speaking of listing, I used to keep all sorts of lists. When I was young, I remembered things like every Brownlow Medallist, all the Presidents of the USA, pets my family had owned and the classification of various animal species. Nowadays, I keep a list of every film I see and the date I watched it on, and a separate list of every film I've seen in order of preference.

I'm sure there are many other hobbies I have or have had, but I can't think of any at the moment. I wish I could say that Nick's was a hobby, but it's more like a full-blown obsession. Should probably try to rein that in a bit. Shocked

Are you saying they don't have pubic hair? How disappointing. Sad

Geez David, you've been the thread kiss of death so far. Wink

I had the coin collection in albums with pages with inserts. One album for Australian coins and one for international. I had a sequence of pennies from 1900 to 1965, missing a few of the more obvious ones, similar with halfpennies. Shillings, threepennys and florins were a bit more difficult.

I've got a linen bank bag of 1966 silver 50c pieces my grandmother gave me, and unopened rolls of first release $1 and $2 coins, as well as very good condition $1 and $2 notes.

Pretty sure there's a gold coin in there somewhere, minted in the early 80's value of either $200 or $300, I forget. I might have to pull that stuff out and have a look through it again now.

Wow, you were so much more organised than me. I literally threw them in the box (not that I ever cared, but if I'd known anything about proper collecting I would have realised that this was the best way to decrease their resell value).

Finding a 1966 round 50c piece was one of the most exciting moments in my brief coin collecting career. You can certainly see why they changed the design, though!

One thing I could never muster any interest for was those 'special edition' coins that were never actually intended for practical use. For me, the appeal lay in the fact that these coins had actually been legal tender and in common use somewhere in the world at some point.

My 66 convertible Mustang. Love it, missus calls it a money pit. I say 'so?'

Racehorses, have shares in 2 at the moment. Joyous Harmony & Mish Mosh. Missus says they're a money pit. I say 'so?'

Collingwood. I can't wait for the season to start!

Kayak Fishing.

Bought a Hobie Kayak (pedal powered) at the start of last year. Love getting out on the water for a bit of a fish.

I collect chainsaws, axes, hand frills and lots more besides.
If it's old, cool, rare and/or rusty I collect it.

Some people collect wine, I collect Guitars. My Mrs said they were a waste of money. I got my collection evaluated for an insurance policy. She wants me to have a sudden death now. Shocked

You have the good sense when she calls your stuff a "Money Pit" to NOT say "So are you but I keep you around"

Smart lad.

Cocktails - not the fluffy sexy rubber ducky stuff with pink umbrellas, but the classic drinks - the manhattan and variations, the various martinis, the old cubans, old fashioneds, the New Orleans historic drinks etc. The whole business of making and sharing great, classic drinks is one that never pales, for me. Stick to four a week, though !!

I've started collecting silver; coins and minted bars.

New hobby, so not much yet, but I'm going to have some fun and hopefully leave my kid something they can underappreciate and sell off to someone in 40 years for far less than its worth.

Haven't collected anything since basketball cards in early high school, I forgot how obsessive the whole process can make you.
