This is the team I expect to be selected:
Williams Brown Toovey
Langdon Frost Sinclair
Varcoe Swan Sicebottom
Elliott Reid Broomhead
Kennedy Cloke Goldsack
Grundy, Pendlebury Adams
De Goey, Greenwood, White, Blair
E: Witts, Crisp, Thomas
The assumptions for round 1 I have made are: Witts lacking match practice, Young, Caff and Scharenberg still finishing rehab, Seedsman lacking match practice, us needing only two tall backs against Brisbane and White to play second ruck. Also I'm going to assume that a conservative approach will be taken with almost younger all players who missed a lot of footy last year inc Oxley, Freeman, Karnezis.
Personally I am hoping Karnezis, Freeman, De Goey all play but I doubt it. I feel the coaches will rely on older players like Blair, Goldy, Toovey and White till other more talented, young layers have a few weeks of strong form in the VFL first. That will take us into May or June till we really start to see the core of new talent really being tried. _________________ Magpies love pies(Lol) |

Hoping that DeGoey stands up during NAB cup and demands selection ahead of Blair. That would make my year. |

^^ You don't think Williams, Kennedy, Karnezis or Grundy should be considered? |

^ yes, they were considered by my one man match committee. jt, jdg, freeman, keeffe and those you named were in the mix. williams is the one who is unluckiest to miss out. even though he has played two practice games who would he be ahead of right now? varcoe gives more flexibility. goldy can provide backline coverage. gault covers the ruck and key forwards.
grundy may come in for witts given where witts is currently at. what the heck, lets give cox a start instead. _________________ Purveyor of sanctimonious twaddle. |

That seems almost spot on for mine. Wouldnt surprise however if Oxley plays instead of Crisp or Karnezis _________________ Beware the swooping Magpie. |

Will NAB cup form count when the Rd 1 team is selected?
Don't mean for the likes of Pendles, Swan and Cloke, but rather the likes of Williams, Toovey, Elliott. _________________ kill for collingwood! |

Kennedy is an absolute certainty, surely. Love him. Only going to improve with more game time, too, he's flying under the radar no doubt.
Kennedy, Freeman, De Goey are going to be revelations, don't worry about that, and Scharenberg too providing he recovers ok and doesn't become a name commonly seen on the injured list.
Karnezis has to start too. White CHF second ruck.
Lower your sights a little, fellow Pies. This team will evolve and evolve rapidly as the year goes on (providing we don't get monstered with injuries and just a few). _________________ Billy Picken, the great No. 25 in the sky! |

Williams is not finding much of the ball yet or providing much run and carry. Broomy does't look fit yet. Freeman will take a while. Wittsy hasn't plated a game yet. Reid may have to play this week and VFL the week after to be ready.
So I don't expect we will be at full strength round 1. Kennedy deserves a game.
Sinclair Brown Toovey
Langdon Frost Crisp
Varcoe Greenwood Sidebottom
Elliott White Fasolo
Goldsack Cloke Kennedy
Grundy Swan Pendlebury
Adams Blair Thomas De Goey
Inj or not match fit: Reid, Witts, Seedsman, Keefe, Broomhead, Young, Moore, Marsh, Scharenberg, Macaffer. _________________ Magpies love pies(Lol) |

I totally agree with you. The development of our young players will progress in the VFL and only if the form of the older established players doesn't drop will wont have dramatic changes. The new crop are very still young bodies and really we have to give them time to develop. Having said that I would like to see Oxley and De Goey in that first round side. Oxley has served time in the VFL defence, is a good kick and mark and De Goey could be taught the game of half-foward or forward pocket. |

Anyone think that Gault is a serious chance to play in round 1 especially if he has another good match this week against the Dogs? _________________ | 1902 | 1903 | 1910 | 1917 | 1919 | 1927 | 1928 | 1929 | 1930 | 1935 | 1936 | 1953 | 1958 | 1990 | 2010 | 2023 | |

yes, from what I have seen at this stage he would be right in the mix.
B:Toovey, Brown, Frost
HB:Langdon, Reid, Sinclair
C:Sidebottom, Pendlebury, Broomhead
HF:Blair, White, Goldsack
F:Elliott, Cloke, Fasolo
Foll:Grundy, Adams, Swan
Int:Greenwood, De Goey, Williams
Sub: Kennedy
I confess that Broomie looks underdone but I think his skills and pace are worth including
Tempted to play Gault up front to stretch their defence and play Goldsack down back instead of Toovey to play the role against one of their speedier forwards. Toovey's kicking and touch has regressed.
Crisp, Varcoe not best 22 for mine. Varcoe barely gets a touch, which was his problem at Geelong. Just goes missing.
Crisp OK against the Hawks but need to eliminate on more offender on the skills front.
Kennedy in until Freeman comes through to take his spot. _________________ One team, one dream - the Pies and this year's premiership |
