Wealthier people who can afford it, sure. The pension is essentially a welfare payment, so I don't see why it shouldn't be means-tested.

Well gee I thought the pension was partly "Thankyou for working your guts out for all those years, and paying tax to support the sick, the needy, the lazy, the ones who were old before you, now we would like to pay you back a bit, the students you helped through uni, they want to pay you back" but no, it's now "you worked hard, paid your taxes, but unlike other who spent spent spent, you saved, so no soup for you". Seems like a good reason to look for loopholes and take advantage of em.

I have no problem with means testing, but means test everything. And it's not just money. Means test ability, to work, to earn, if your lazy, or don't want to work, scale back the dole. Some people don't want to work, they just take take take. How come they get off Scott free?

How can you test that.

It could be hard for people that are on the Disability Pension

Just because it's hard doesn't make it impossible. My feeling Dave, is, if they did their job properly, stopped people cheating, claiming single parent pension, when they are not, refusing to look for work, not accepting jobs they see as beneath them, and those on a disablitliy pension that shouldn't be, then people like you, who really need help, would get all the help they need. Extra funding to assist you, to learn and get more out of life, and maybe even get some kind of job. Cheats on welfare are not just cheating tax payers, they are cheater the real needy. The sick, the poor, the elderly.

Spend money on resources instead of first class airfares and chauffeurs for politicians, cut their ridiculous pensions, and actually care about the community.public Nursing homes are a disgrace, and an embarrassment, a shame on our society. That's how we treat our elders?

The whole world needs turning upside down, priorities need sorting. It's a big ask, probably too big.

Cheers

Wow TP...Isn't it amazing how the welfare payments and subsidies you want like the pension and negative gearing are all legitimate while things like the dole, single parents pension and support for students are a rort for the undeserving...

Probably not a bad decision on his part, doing stuff like this. Rather than being the bloke who passes the 'pub test', he can be the bloke at the pub. So long as he doesn't start glassing people, he's on a winner.

And the New Temperance Movement, otherwise known as the progressive left tut tut at Tone for having a beer at the pub.

^ Progressive left? More like desperate Fairfax hacks trying to draw blood from a stone.

Except for people who are paid to pretend to, nobody genuinely cares about this.

person A, Slim Dusty, can sing a song about drinking in a pub with his mate Duncan, but he can get away with it because he was a genuinely nice bloke who could communicate with all sides of the political spectrum. And he was loved by everybody.

Person B, Bob Hawke, got showered with beer on national television, celebrating a yacht owned by Australia's biggest charlatan. He gets away with it because he's a lovable larrikin, in spite of his famed rudeness to journalists.

Then there's our Tony, sculling a beer in front of a bunch of Hooray Henrys...
proving, like Downer and McMahon before him, that there are some things that just make you cringe...

Honestly, it doesn't make me cringe nearly as much as it would if Rudd or Gillard did it. Or Shorten, for that matter.

Some people are natural beer chuggers and some aren't. Rudd's preferred tipple is probably orange juice, while Gillard likely played the odd game of goon-of-fortune on the hills hoist in her younger years. Howard drinks the blood of refugees. Shorten's the kind of guy who walks into a pub in his suit, orders a single beer (Tooheys) and then goes home and watches an episode of Everybody Loves Raymond. And Tony? Well, if his Prime Ministership is anything to go by, this is him in his natural habitat.

So Tony "downed" one at the The Royal Oak huh?
Interesting choice of pub,
it seems to mirror the fortunes of our own battleship the SS tEAM aUSTRALIA (Captain's Call at the helm!).
...
HMS Royal Oak was a Revenge-class battleship built for the Royal Navy during the First World War.
Launched in 1914 and completed in 1916, Royal Oak first saw combat at the Battle of Jutland as part of the Grand Fleet.
In peacetime, she served in the Home fleet, more than once coming under accidental attack.
The ship drew worldwide attention in 1928 when her senior officers (including the Captain) were controversially court-martialled.
At his trial Captain Dewar was asked... 'Is it true, sir, that you called the bandmaster a bugger?'
'Yes it is, and what I want to know is, who called the bugger a bandmaster?)
Attempts to modernise Royal Oak throughout her 25-year career could not fix her fundamental lack of speed and by the start of the Second World War, she was no longer suited to front-line duty.
On 14 October 1939, Royal Oak was anchored at Scapa Flow in Orkney, Scotland, when she was torpedoed by the German submarine U-47.
The loss of the old ship had considerable effect on wartime morale.

uh yep that's exactly what I said!! not!

not saying negative gearing is a good thing, in fact after my recent tenant sage, which will cost us thousands, and the insurance industry thousands, im all for scrapping it!! Let the $£$%^%%$ subsidised university grad who is now a performing arts teacher at a private school, and her scumbag partner that works nightshirt at a cable place, save and buy their own place to trash, or maybe you want more government tax subsidised housing for these scum bags to destroy. I tried to find out who they are leasing the brand spanking new house they moved into to warn them, but had no luck. Today we discovered they have blocked the plumbing, probably with a nappy, and it's backed up everything. The sink is also blocked with crap, it's leaked into the kitchen cupboards, and the whole kitchen will need demolishing. Thank god for insurance. They may have done me a favour, we can update it! Same for the carpet, which was almost spotless when they moved in, and now is totally £$%$ed!

"dole, single parents pension and support for students are a rort for the undeserving" try changing it to are rorted by the undeserving, meaning the deserving have less
