Gotta be Bishop, right? I'd be flabbergasted (albeit secretly pleased) if they chose Turnbull over her.

Perhaps they'll parachute Peta into a safe seat. She's smarter than their entire front bench.

Something like that might satisfy the critics in the party room and give Abbott some time. Its not like he is listening to advice anyway.

Micallef doesn't let people pretending to be from The Czech Republic watch his videos. I'll have to watch it when I've returned to virtual Australia.

The Polls have the LNP back, does this mean the challenge will stop?

I think the wheels have already started spinning, Culprithe might get a stay of execution, but the next time he screws up badly or the polls start to decline, talk of a spill will come back twice as hard as before.

Having said that, though, those poll figures are alarming. 49-51 already? If Shorten can't capitalise on this mess, the ALP party room need to start asking serious questions about his leadership (well, besides the ones they should have been asking 12 months ago).

Peter Hartcher is taking an optimistic interpretation:

(I say optimistic because these journalists need a spill like a junkie needs heroin.)

Yesterday Turnbull was emphatic that the priority is the nsw state election at the end of this month.

The polls this morning have improved for Abbott. Please Lordy let them be so for a good while yet - in fact to just before the next election.

It's a fairfax poll so probably just a bunch of Labor voters suddenly realising that Shorten is actually a real chance to be PM. Razz

I heard a political commentator on the radio saying that the latest Newspoll is more reflective of parties internal polling and has a bit more of a gap, so I wouldn't put too much weight on this one.

What will be interesting is if the far right nutjobs win out over the more small l Liberals. Dragging the party out further to the right is suicide. The policies that Abbott has (very poorly) tried to sell just aren't going to get up.

If the management of the party is smart they'lll realise that their rusted on Righties actually have no where else to go. The Labor rusted on lefties can (and a lot have) fled to the Greens, but there isn't a viable option for the right wing. So, the Libs could move more toward the centre (which would happen under Turnbull) and compete with Labor for the middle ground swingers, while keeping their own base of nutters intact albeit unhappy.

Not a good result for Labor. Remains to be seen if the Libs have the stones to do it.
