Yes, 1061. Abbott's motley crew of front benchers has got its marching orders from Peta, and they are out in force talking up the PM.

Of particular interest to me is the energy with which different ones amongst them have been following her script. Hockey and Abetz have been especially diligent in their public loyalty. One assumes that this is because no new Liberal leader with a grain of sense would keep either of those two walking electoral disaster zones on the front bench, and they know it. They have their jobs only so long as Abbott keeps his job.

Meanwhile, several of the other cabinet monkeys are keeping a low profile. Pyne, for example, hasn't been much apparent; the same goes for Hunt. Those two, and one or two others like them, reckon that their best chance of surviving the reshuffle when the leadership changes is to avoid notice and trust that the new leader will feel obliged to retain at least half of the most senior men.

Over on the opposition benches, Shorten & Co clearly believe that nothing they could say at the moment would do any more harm to the government than what the government is already doing to itself. In any case, what pressman worth his salt would pay attention just now? Shorten has put his feet up and is watching the show. Time for him to speak up when he knows who the new leader is. (Of course, if the Liberals are as stupid as he hopes they are and I think they are, the new leader will be T. Abbott.)

As for the press, no doubt they would like the show to go on for as long as possible. It's not a bad thing for them if Abbott manages to hang on for a year or more, fighting off challenges and internal disunity all the way. Think of all those easy headlines!

those of us who saw it coming from the day Kroger parachuted this clown into a safe seat knew exactly what was coming. University is the only place where the born to rule mob are treated like lepers, and are openly laughed at, because most of their followers don't bother to vote or turn up to student meetings. but it is there they learn to shout bullsh!t and keep repeating it over and over.

We even had some right wing clown writing
"Rape is a man's right to choose" all over the walls then whingeing about free speech when the feminists covered it up. bad things happen at uni but it is supposed to be a learning experience. they are not fighting Trotsyists and ultra-radical feminists anymore they are fighting ordinary people, with jobs, medical conditions and kids they want to send to uni.

As for trade unions, if there was no union when someone accused me of downloading porn at work, then i would probably be unemployed...

A quick check confirms my suspicions: these calls are mostly coming from the same people who've publicly opposed Abbott's leadership since late 2013 (some of you might remember Dennis Jensen from this: http://www.smh.com.au/federal-politics/political-news/liberal-mp-dennis-jensen-hits-out-at-coalition-for-dumping-science-portfolio-20130917-2tw9y.html).

And yep, predictably, Ian MacDonald is getting in on the action as well:

The public dissent has to start from somewhere, perhaps, but I suspect news media outlets are making a little more of this story than they should right now. But it wouldn't be like them to try to create a leadership spill out of nothing, would it? Cool

Andrew Bolt totally agrees with you. Laughing

I must admit I got a giggle out of writing that aimed at David.

Yep, definitely malcontents with an axe to wield. The question is whether the sentiments they're expressing are actually much more widely shared, and they're just the ones with the courage to put their heads above the parapets. I hope so.

WA Liberal MP Luke Simpkins confirms he will seek leadership spill

Yahoo7 and Agencies
February 6, 2015, 1:40 pm

West Australian Liberal MP Luke Simpkins has emailed party room colleagues to announce he will move a spill motion against the Prime Minister.

It will be seconded by Don Randall.

The ABC has been told the MPs called the Prime Minister shortly before sending the email.

Earlier Deputy Liberal leader Julie Bishop refused to counsel any colleagues considering moving a spill motion.

West Australian backbencher Dennis Jensen became the first Liberal backbencher to openly call for the prime minister's head.

Dr Jensen said Mr Abbott had to go as leader but he didn't want to be seen as the person "pulling the trigger".

“In my view, yes. The sooner the better, from my perspective,” Dr Jensen said on Tuesday.

“I think he is terminal.

"I believe that it is necessary that this is brought to a head and lanced."

Dennis Jensen told The West Australian that Mr Abbott was “terminal” and that a new leader needed to be found “the sooner the better”. Photo: ABC

Dr Jensen, who played a critical role in toppling Malcolm Turnbull as Liberal leader in 2009 by co-sponsoring a spill motion with fellow WA Liberal Wilson Tuckey, told the PM by text that he had withdrawn his support a few days before the PM’s decision to knight Prince Philip.

Asked if he had a preferred candidate as leader, Dr Jensen said: “Not right at the moment, no-one’s sort of put their hands up. I mean, I’d have to wait and see what candidates stand.

Now, Mr Abbott is under pressure to improve his performance.

His deputy, Ms Bishop, previously ruled out directly challenging for the leadership.

Ms Bishop told a cabinet meeting in Canberra on Tuesday she had not been campaigning for the prime minister's job or ringing backbenchers to canvas support.

“I have told my Cabinet colleagues that I am not campaigning for the job as Prime Minister, that I am not ringing the backbench asking for support and that I am not counting any numbers,” she told The West Australian.

“I have been the deputy for seven years and I’ve not before and I will not challenge the leader. And as I’ve said repeatedly, I support the leader.”

"I will not challenge the leader."

Only 18 percent of voters say Tony Abbott is best to lead the Coalition.

The prime minister has been blamed for much of the malaise in Victoria and Queensland, where the Liberals have lost government.

They are also lagging well behind Labor in national opinion polls.
