David, if this is some ham fisted attempt at equating Australians to the USA, gp stick your head in a toilet blow bubbles. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

I prefer this rendition, personally:
http://youtu.be/yqrAPOZxgzU
Not saying we're Yanks, Stui, just that this is a particularly Septic proposal.
Jo, I'd vote for that rendition as our new anthem. But I still wouldn't sing it (or any other anthem) at 12pm on Australia Day because that's just weird. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

you know this septic shit really pisses me off.
David, have you ever been to the states? I have 4 times, and yeah theres a few rednecks but guess what? theres plenty here too. and you might find their patriotic outpouring grating, but quite frankly I find the anti establishment, anti Australian sewerage you spew out to be just as grating.
you don't like it? you don't want the day off? then go to work, volunteer somewhere, bore your son to tears with shit art house movies and leave the celebrating to those of us who can take it at the fun face value, in the true "aussie spirit", its meant to be enjoyed in. _________________ You cant fix stupid, turns out you cant quarantine it either! |

On the first part, yep, I do. I guess we're each entitled to our opinions, though I'm not sure exactly what I've said that qualifies as "anti-Australian".
As for Australia Day, whatevs. Like most people who've thought about it for more than five minutes, I think it'd be a good idea to change the date, but otherwise I don't get care much for it. Work/not work, double-time or regular rates. Happy for others to enjoy it (in a responsible and civil manner), but it's not really my cup of tea.
But yes, I am looking forward to sitting at home one day and watching unAustralian art films (as opposed to non-unAustralian Hollywood blockbusters). With subtitles. Viva anarchista! _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace

If I ever have to listen to that dirge, that's the version I'd select.
Encouraging people to all sing the anthem together at 12pm is a fkn stupid idea. Forced patriotism is just so dodgy. Calling it a septic proposal though is a bit of stereotyping just a tad.
BTW, that article referred to a song "Straya" sung to the tune of an Outcast song that people have apparently been offering as an alternative anthem
Here it is.

Despite myself, I actually didn't mind it after I got over the temptation to kill it after 10 seconds and let it play through, but a national Anthem?
Nope, sorry. I can think of 5 I'd have ahead of it without putting any effort into it at all, and one of those is our current one.
I would put it ahead of God Save the Queen though _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

I thought it was pretty cringeworthy to be honest. Wouldn't have minded it if it had thrown a few funny lines in, but by the time they cut to the clip from the Qantas ad, all hope was lost.
Any new anthem should be at least mildly irreverent, I think. Isn't that supposed to be one of our defining national traits? _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Yeah, irreverence is one of our traits, I'm not sure how you'd wrap that into a national Anthem though.
Maybe we could slip a line in somewhere bagging Poms in general. We could also slip something in about how noo Zulanders are our bitches and every one of them who does good becomes Australian.
That would be a good way to turn an average start into a thread with potential, what stuff would you want to reference in an Australian National Anthem?
Don't offer an actual anthem, just what stuff should be in there. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

Haven't checked the links, but I'm assuming it's a pissed test side singing Khe Sanh...?
On the idea of a mass national sing along, I'm not sure even the yanks have something that daft. _________________ Two more flags before I die! |

No, it was someone singing the yank national anthem, hence the reaction. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |
