Anyone following the Asian Cup?

Great game last week when Australia won 4:1 playing Kuwait.

(if there's already a thread on this please rectify modds - I didn't notice one).

Cheers

Yes I'm following it somewhat WPT but not avidly however!

Australia started very well on Friday night beating Kuwait 4-1 despite being a goal down early in the game. I was very impressed with the performances of Iran and Japan as well on the weekend or today.

Iran's fans at AAMI Park were very impressive I must say and very loud on Sunday. It was the first time they had played in Australia since the infamous World Cup Qualifier clash back in 1997 against Australia when they defeated us on the away goal rule and qualified to play in the 1998 World Cup hosted by France.

Impressive performance by Iraq to defeat Jordan 1-0 today as well. It's great to see the sport bring these countries together despite the obvious problems in these regions at the moment.

I think the mods should redirect this thread to the EPL and A-League Soccer section as it relates to football (soccer) specifically.

You've gotta laugh at Craig Foster. Does anyone shoot his mouth off so much and shoot himself in the foot at the same time? Laughing

http://www.theage.com.au/sport/soccer/the-socceroos-are-going-to-take-some-beating-and-a-win-in-the-asian-cup-is-not-beyond-belief-20150117-12sc6y.html

After Foster penned this piece you could lay a solid bet on the fact the Socceroos would lose their next match. On cue they did. One nil to South Korea. The Aussies dominated possession but for most of the game were too laborious in their build ups, and when they had their chances they missed them. Three sitters by my reckoning. Kruse should give up the game after that last miss. Embarassed

I think we are seeing why Melbourne Victory fans are quite happy now to have Muscat rather than Postocoglou as coach. More direct football is the answer. And far more exciting than watching the Socceroos flick passes to each other like a game of pass the parcel.

If the Socceroos get past China next week they have the prospect of facing Japan in the semis. No Craig Foster, I think the chances of Australia winning the Asian Cup when out the window last night.

Both games last night went to penalties.

Iraq def. Iran 7-6 on penalties (3-3 after full & extra time)
By all reports was a great match.

UAE def Japan 5-4 on penalties (1-1 after full & extra time) .
Japan were favourites coming into the tournament.

Socceroos will now play UAE for a spot in the final.
South Korea will play Iraq in the other semi.

Socceroos beat UAE 2-0 in last nights semi and now face South Korea in Saturday nights final.

Goal scorers last night Trent Sainsbury and Jason Davidson (son of former Socceroo Alan Davidson) added to the spread of scorers during the tournament.

extraordinary that the former lib govt did not bid for one of the semis. i went to three of the games here and they were a terrific experience. i am slowly liking the game more and more which once upon a time i would have preferred to poke my eyes out than watch.

A massive night for the Socceroos and Australian football! I hope we can beat South Korea tonight!

They beat us earlier in the group stages but we did admittedly squander many chances in that game to obtain a result of some kind that night so I'm quietly confident we'll deliver tonight. I hope this isn't a repeat of the 2011 Asian Cup when we lost to Japan.
