Ashton Agar added to Australias squad for the fourth Test against India at SCG

FALLEN golden boy Ashton Agar has made a surprise return to the Test fold, called into Australias squad for the fourth Test at the SCG.

Eighteen months after a 19-year-old Agar was called in as a stunning replacement for Nathan Lyon for the first Ashes Test at Trent Bridge, the spin duo could pair each other in Sydney next week.

Agar experienced a fairytale debut, scoring 98 batting at No.11, but was dropped after the next Test at Lords.

Agar hasnt been sighted in international cricket since the 2013 Ashes series.

Agar hasnt been sighted in international cricket since the 2013 Ashes series.

Following that ill-fated Ashes series, Agar went from next big thing to discard in the blink of an eye, appearing to fall by the wayside in selection discussion.

But after a strong domestic Matador One-Day Cup tournament and modest start to the Sheffield Shield competition, Agar is back.

Welcome back from exile, AA!
Still grieving about that 98 on debut. Not you, me.

Strange selection indeed.

Ash Agar has 7 wickets @ 45 in the Sheffield Shield, this year.

Fawad Ahmed has 18 @ 30.7 and sits 3rd. on the bowlers list and has the best figures, by quite a margin, for any spinner.

Next best are Steve O'Keefe with 9 wickets at 28.4, Adam Zampa, 9 @ 44, Cam Boyce, 8 @ 35.5

All ahead of Agar.

If they'd decided the wanted a left armer, then why not O'Keefe, on his home track ?? After all, he played against Pakistan, just 4 Tests back and took 4 wickets as the Pakis walloped the Aussies.

Must be very confusing for Ahmed. Sad

He's back! Smile

He just seemed disappear into obscurity after his huge innings score on his test debut last year.

In that context, very confusing indeed.

That isn't the issue, Dave. They aren't competing for one spot in the team.

But, if you want to compare them as bowlers (apart from 1 being a spinner and the other, a fast/medium) Agar has a first class wicket average of 44. Watson's is 33.4 and a Test average of 29.4

Some Test bowlers with worse bowling averages than Watson: Brett Lee, James Anderson, Kapil Dev, Dan Vettori, Harbhajan, Zaheer Khan and Chaminda Vaas.

According to Mark Waugh on inside cricket Agar was brought in as emergency if Sydney is a dust bowl which it won't be (why prepare wickets to suit them should be a green top IMO) it's more to get him around the group looking to west indies tour and world cup/T20 spot that may be available. He is a gifted batsman and superb fielder it's like a reward for effort

It will be neither a dust bowl or a green top.

Highly unlikely that Agar will be in the XI. It really boils down to: will Agar be a better wicket-taking prospect than Hazelwood ? Add to that, Hazelwood would be bowling on his home deck.

Dave, nobody's worse than Shane Watson.
The sooner Mitch Marsh returns to fitness and form, the sooner we can send this spud into overdue retirement.

Oh Wokko, that's just anti-Victorian paranoia nonsense. Sad

You know very well that he will be selected [eventually, when out of form].
And he will play his token 1-2 tests before he sees a career in exile, just like Maxwell, Hastings, Quinney, Wade, McKay, McGain, McDonald, White, and of course the greatest threat to Wicky Ponting's fwagile ego - Brad Hodge. Surprised
