With medicinal cannabis use now legal in 24 states of the US and for recreational use in 4 others, isn't it time for Australia to move forward on this?

I say go all the way, recreational use as well. Massive tax windfall for the govt.

A much safer drug than alcohol.

Over 70% of calls to police are for alcohol related incidents. Gunja smokers would rather; chill, eat and go to sleep. Cool

The use, possession, sale, cultivation, and transportation of cannabis (marijuana) in the United States under federal law is illegal but the federal government has announced that if a state wants to pass a law to decriminalize cannabis for recreational or medical use they can do so, but they need to have a regulation system in place for cannabis. Cannabis is listed as a Schedule I substance under the Controlled Substances Act of 1970, the highest classification under the legislation. This means that the substance has been decided by the federal government to have both high abuse potential and no established, safe medical use.

However, individual state laws do not always conform to the federal standard. State-level proposals for the rescheduling of cannabis have met with mixed success. Currently, the states of Colorado, Washington along with the states of Alaska and Oregon have fully legalized marijuana. The District of Columbia's legalization is currently blocked by Congress. twenty-four states have both medical marijuana and decriminalization laws. Nine states and Guam have legalized medical marijuana. Five states have only decriminalized possession laws. And twenty-two states and four inhabited territories state that marijuana is illegal, a felony, or a misdemeanor.

As long as growing the plant isn't illegal like with tobacco then I'm all for legalization.

Legalise it, tax it and police it like alcohol. It's OK to consume as much as you want, when you want, but if you get behind the wheel stoned, then you are punished.

You already get done for that What's, but I agree with the sentiment. Equally being high in public, at work or whatever. If it's just a recreational activity done at home then its far less destructive than alcohol (Stoners dont tend to get violent and beat up their families or random people in public).

An amazing double first for Nick's Collingwood Bulletin Board: (1) Tannin and Skids agree on something. (2) Tannin says "great post, Skids". Yes,, you saw it here first.

Great post, Skids.

yes and yes

I think the ice problem could be more easily tackled by police if cannabis was legal. Pot smokers would be more likely to speak up. There is a dealer in my street, the police just can't catch him. Usual story - bikies, cheap or free till addicted etc etc

I read a paper on appetite and chemotherapy which suggested that cannabis is likely to help, and little else does.

Colorado legalised recently and crime rates are down and the economy is growing.

I don't get what you're saying here partypie?? If you mean police resources could be better focussed rather that worrying about pot smokers, then, yes I concur.

There really is no link between pot smokers and hard drug users, this is the ultimate wives tale, I think that's what you're inferring?

100% correct.

I'm not for lagalising Canabis but I'm all for legalising cannabis! Razz

I'd be happy for it to be legalised in the state for the sake of medicinal purposes but I'm also open to the idea of legalising it for recreational purposes as well as long as it doesn't affect the greater community as what'sinaname was discussing earlier!

Overall good opening post Skids!

Wow Jezza! You mean you haven't tried lagalising? Mate, you haven't lived till you've lagalised with a few close friends. (Hint: don't tell your mum, she might not understand.)

Legalising it for medicinal use is an absolute no-brainer, and I find it incomprehensible that we haven't done that here yet.

As for legalising it for recreational use, I'd support it on the proviso that a) it can only be sold by specialty shops (i.e. not off the shelf at Coles and Woolworths) and b) that its production be strongly regulated.
