The only non-Christian sources are Josephus and Tacitus, from memory.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sources_for_the_historicity_of_Jesus

Apparently nearly all historical scholars nowadays believe that Jesus existed:

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christ_myth_theory

Quote:
Many proponents use a three-fold argument first developed in the 19th century that the New Testament has no historical value, there are no non-Christian references to Jesus Christ from the first century, and that Christianity had pagan and/or mythical roots.

Despite arguments put forward by authors who have questioned the existence of a historical Jesus, there remains a nearly universal consensus agreement in historical-critical biblical scholarship that Jesus lived. However, certain scholars, particularly in Europe, have recently made the case that while there are a number of plausible "Jesuses" that could have existed, there can be no certainty as to which Jesus was the historical Jesus, and that there should also be more scholarly research and debate on this topic. The two main events agreed upon by most biblical scholars are that Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist and was crucified by the order of the Roman Prefect Pontius Pilate.

God might or might not exist, but, on the off chance that He does, why wouldn't you want to connect with Him? You have a free bet with a massive pay off and still some refuse to take the bet.

I guess too many are living in a material world and are just a material girl.

Even if such a being exists, who says there's a pay off? And what if the "prize" for connecting with him is eternal damnation?

I'm a material girl and proud of it. Smile

Pick any one. The right one, mind you - pick the wrong one and you are going straight to Hell. Your odds are only 987 to one against. What are you waiting for?

And in fact, of course, the "pay off" is zero, zip, nada, while the "free" bet costs you and the rest of humanity endless thousands of years of ignorance, war, guilt, misery, conflict, and wasted lives. Summary: picking a god is the biggest sucker bet of all time. Advice: buy a bridge. It's cheaper and you've got a much better chance of getting the expected payoff.

And you highlight the problem. God is supposed to be what an individual believes not what others want / force you to believe through their preaching or even the multiple versions of the bible. My God wears a Collingwood jumper, but was busy on some important Saturdays in September, such as, an not limited to 1970, 1977, 2002, 03, 11. He also wields a really cool broadsword and wears plate armour and has a Lego Vitrovius beard going on.

Bucks ain't there yet, and Eddie hates it when we call him a God. Malty was our last God, but we re-wrote our Bible to portray him as Beelzebub.

Indeed. The revelation that the book was essentially a comically overwrought allegory for an imagined downfall of the Roman Empire circa 70 AD—and not, as I had been taught, a prophecy of things to come within my lifetime—pretty much brought down the whole house of cards for me as a 15 year old. That was the moment that I realised that the Bible couldn't be divinely inspired fact.

I lost interest when god told Adam and Eve not to eat the forbidden fruit!
I mean what kind of benevolent god would do that to 2 lovers in paradise?

~~~(Warning, the following is laced with (some) irony)
Christians say God created man in "his" image.
If that's true then God is a greedy, jealous, petty minded, mean spirited, masochistic, misogynist that is only ever content spoiling "his" creations happiness!!!
Personally I reckon he (WE) should admit defeat, go back to the drawing board and put the creation of the world up for public tender!!!
I see nothing redeeming about the Abrahamic God that would make me think it is worthy of respect, let alone worship. I see a jealous, evil, vindictive being that we should fight against with whatever power we have against it.
Jesus might've been good PR, but God lets the cat out of the bag with Revelation.
I'll take the Anglo-Saxon/Norse Gods anyday, at least they're all fighting on our side at Ragnarok, not damning us to eternity of pain and suffering. Laughing
No I didn't. You are listed right there. (If your omniscience is away at the dry cleaners today, try looking between the Benzhuist god and the Maori god.)
