Only that the death penalty exercises a macabre fascination for certain disturbed individuals, and acts as a motivating factor to commit crimes which attract that penalty. That is the only reason I can think of to set against the several good reasons for it. On balance, it's a tough call.

Although we need to be careful that an "extreme circumstances only" death penalty doesn't become a thin end of the wedge thing. It's easy enough to imagine a mad-dog government whipping up some hysteria and then extending it to more and more crimes, including some acts that deserve a medal more than a penalty. (I'm thinking of the recent US whistleblowers as examples.) And if you can't imagine a mad-dog government doing that, you haven't been paying attention for the last 18 months.

You both make very good pints here Stui & Tannin. I honestly believe that Knight, Bryant & the bloke who threw his daughter off the bridge have no hope of rehabilitation, and will never be released. I don't believe there is any valid reason for their continued existence. But I wouldn't want to live under a Government with that sort of power. I just wouldn't trust them.

Having said that, I'm very disappointed with the standard of criminals we have in our prisons these days. I was certain that all three of them would have been topped by now.

I think it's called protective custody, or solitary confinement, but yeah I agree!

A fake martyrdom? No way ! The hell they deserve is to live long enough in a sterile prison to realise that their ideology is bankrupt, backward defeated, and unworthy of the belief for which they gave a whole life of beautiful freedom. If there's a cell they can share with Anders Breivik that would be even better.

The French have been at the forefront for the global abolition of the death penalty. The usual right wing extremists will now become shrill, but like any civilised country should, the French have no capital punishment.

Yep, screw giving them the martyrdom, lock the bastards up or feed them to pigs.
