1. What is the first film you remember seeing?
Possibly Laurence of Arabia, in Alice Springs, at the (then) only cinema in town, the roofless open air theatre. I would have been 5.
2. What is the last film you watched?
No idea. Nothing worth remembering, apparently.
3. What was the last film that made you cry?
There's one that does it every time. Err ... Can't remember.
4. What is the least funny comedy you've ever seen?
Oh god, don't even ask that, there are so many. Anything with Steve Martin in it would be worth a mention, but there are lots of much worse ones. Doubt I've seen any of them all the way through though.
5. What is the scariest film you've ever seen?
Can't remember any one in particular. There must have been a few.
6. What is the sexiest film you've ever seen?
Nothing comes to mind.
7. Who is your favourite actor, and why?
Bogart, of course. There are others?
8. Who is your favourite director?
David Lean, I guess. I can think of his name and two films he made, so that alone puts in in a class of about 4 or 5.
9. What is your favourite subtitled film?
My Life as a Dog, natch.
10. If you could live in a movie, what would it be, and what character would you be?
What a strange idea! I've thought about it for however long it takes to feed the cat and make a cup of tea and but nothing much occurs to me. What about My life as a Dog? I could be the old guy with the lingerie catalogue.
11. What is the worst film you've ever seen?
No idea. Who remembers this stuff? If it's bad enough to qualify and for some reason I can't avoid watcing it, I tune out and doze/read/stare at the wall, whatever it takes to ignore it. But you can count 95% of all modern movies made in the USA as contenders.
12. What is your favourite cinema?
There is only one in this town, but I never go there. I did go ... oh ... maybe 15 years ago, but it was too hot and smelled of dirty socks and popcorn. Yet worse, I had to sit there and waste a couple of perfectly good hours watching a movie.
13. What is your favourite cinema food?
No such thing, see 12.
14. How many films do you own on videotape (VHS or Betamax)?
I probably chucked them both out already.
15. Have you ever seen a laserdisc?
No.
16. Who is Francis Ford Coppola and why should we care about him?
A movie director. Had something to do with Clockwork Orange which apparently introduced a whole new level of pointless Amerrican violence into "entertainment". I saw no reason to give the evil cnut money then, let alone watch such rubbish of my own free will, and see no reason to change my mind now.
17. Did you honestly like any of the Star Wars prequels?
I saw all three Star Wars movies for the first time on the same day, in order, at a cinema in Melbourne somewere. That was pretty cool. From the question, I assume that there are recent spin-offs. From my rusted on cynical view of the movie industry, I assume that they are crap.
18. What film that you have never seen do you most want to see?
Amelie
19. Choose a random Nick's poster and name a film you think they would enjoy (and explain why).
David. Dr Strangelove. Coz it would blow his mind if he could ever stop looking at the technicalities and realise it's actually a very, very realistic social documentary thinly disguised as a comedy. Can someone as young as David really understand the 1960s world, the way people felt and thought back then? Can he feel it in his liver? Or just watch without genuine understanding? Not sure.
20. Would Stui like this film?
Probably yes.
21. You're having a movie night with Tannin, Swoop42, Think Positive and pietillidie. You need to choose a film that everyone (including you) will enjoy. What is it?
The Castle
22. What film would you feel most uncomfortable about watching with your parents?
Nothing comes to mind. They (well, mostly my sister but them too) insisted on me watching some incredibly uplifting and meaningful film from East Germany once, or so they said, but the first 20 minutes all seemed to be about the horrors of living under the secret police. Not having any other choice, I went to bed three hours early so as not to have to sit through the rest of it.
23. What film do you most refuse to watch on principle?
Almost all of them. Life is too short to watch crap! _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |

Oddly enough, I nearly said that too, not 'coz it isn't funny but because it is so funny that my brother and (of all people) my mother saw it about three times each before I did and apparently committed the whole damn thing to memory parrot-fashion. By the time I saw it, I had heard every single funny line five times over, and the only lines I hadn't heard were the half-dozen unfunny ones.
Years later, I can watch it and laugh again. _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |

1. What is the first film you remember seeing?
Neverending Story at the cinema.
2. What is the last film you watched?
Braveheart.
3. What was the last film that made you cry?
War Horse, but it was more choked up. Haven't cried due to a movie since I was a kid watching Neverending Story.
4. What is the least funny comedy you've ever seen?
Probably something by Mel Brooks, he misses a hell of a lot more than he hits.
5. What is the scariest film you've ever seen?
Movies generally don't scare me, but The First Power gave me the creeps and The Ring US remake did it for me too.
6. What is the sexiest film you've ever seen?
Secretary, Blue Velvet, Last Tango in Paris
7. Who is your favourite actor, and why?
Mel Gibson : I always believe his roles and nobody does 'crazy man' better Brad Pitt a close second
8. Who is your favourite director?
James Cameron, David Fincher, Michael Bay (Haters gonna hate), Kubrick, Kevin Smith; too many to pin down 1
9. What is your favourite subtitled film?
Das Boot
10. If you could live in a movie, what would it be, and what character would you be?
Nope, can't do this one.
11. What is the worst film you've ever seen?
Probably something that critics loved but I found to be unentertaining drivel.
12. What is your favourite cinema?
Gold Class
13. What is your favourite cinema food?
Jaffas
14. How many films do you own on videotape (VHS or Betamax)?
Still have a few, about 10-12
15. Have you ever seen a laserdisc?
I know I have but don't remember what it was.
16. Who is Francis Ford Coppola and why should we care about him?
Apocalypse Now and The Godfather. Truly a genius. Also didn't direct the equally brilliant A Clockwork Orange, but I'm sure Kubrick wouldn't mind the comparison.
17. Did you honestly like any of the Star Wars prequels?
Yes. The first one was so anticipated I liked it in spite of it being kind of horrible. The 2nd and 3rd ones were alright.
18. What film that you have never seen do you most want to see?
Dr Strangelove
19. Choose a random Nick's poster and name a film you think they would enjoy (and explain why).
PtiD - Donnie Darko. No idea why, but PtiD seems to be a cerebral fellow who would appreciate the mind bending.
20. Would Stui like this film?
No idea, why don't you ask him?
21. You're having a movie night with Tannin, Swoop42, Think Positive and pietillidie. You need to choose a film that everyone (including you) will enjoy. What is it?
12 Monkeys, The Matrix or maybe Gattaca.
22. What film would you feel most uncomfortable about watching with your parents?
Nothing really, but I don't really watch films with my mum anyway.
23. What film do you most refuse to watch on principle?
Star Wars VII will be my first, although curiosity will probably get the better of me. |

I have actually seen that, years ago—I was only 16 or 17, but I think I felt the real horror of it then (though, as you say, more a theoretical horror than a lived experience of dread). Its humour is quite sharp, if (oh god, spare me from the wrath of any other cinephiles reading this) perhaps a little dated. I have to say I found the recent film In the Loop—a dark comedy on similar themes—much funnier and more entertaining. I expect you'd enjoy it, if you could break your boycott of films made after 1986!
But Kubrick's next film, 2001: A Space Odyssey, will never be topped. I'm still completely in awe of that.

Ah yes, Blue is the Warmest Colour. You'll appreciate the sex scenes, and if you've got a heart and don't mind reading for three hours you'll get engrossed in the rest. But you didn't hear this from me! Just see it. _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |

1. What is the first film you remember seeing?
An American Tail: Fievel Goes West. I was only 3, and already liked rodents. I still like rodents; terrible musical interludes, not so much.
http://youtu.be/e6xSNxZc7-Q
2. What is the last film you watched?
All These Women. Swedish slapstick comedy from the '60s, directed by my child's namesake (Ingmar Bergman).
3. What was the last film that made you cry?
The Mother and the Whore. Specifically, this scene:
http://youtu.be/oO-WE-g-v8A
I don't cry during films ever, really, but I very nearly cried when I saw this at the cinema. It's so beautiful.
4. What is the least funny comedy you've ever seen?
Good lord, where to start? The Eddie Murphy vanity piece Norbit was one of the most repulsive films I've ever seen (its one-joke premise is that obese people are funny, and imagine how terrible it would be if you were in a relationship with one!). Anything with Adam Sandler would have to be a close second.
5. What is the scariest film you've ever seen?
Perhaps not 'scary' per se, but Eraserhead is by far the best horror film I've ever seen. The Exorcist is probably the scariest conventional horror film I've seen, with the American remake of The Ring close behind.
6. What is the sexiest film you've ever seen?
The Dreamers. Eva Green, Louis Garrel, kinky incest theme, gratuitous nudity, what more do you need? Special mentions to the delightfully perverse Pedro Almodovar film Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! and '70s French short film collection Immoral Tales.
7. Who is your favourite actor, and why?
Jean-Pierre Léaud. Seemed to be in pretty much every great French film of the '60s and '70s, and several more since.
8. Who is your favourite director?
Ingmar Bergman. You might have guessed by now.
9. What is your favourite subtitled film?
Celine and Julie Go Boating
I can't really explain it. It just is.
http://youtu.be/3nJ4RInGt9E
10. If you could live in a movie, what would it be, and what character would you be?
Again, Celine and Julie Go Boating. Either of them. Or the cat.
11. What is the worst film you've ever seen?
See question 4. I'm a pretty discerning viewer, so I'm sure that there are a lot of equally terrible movies out there that I've had the good sense to avoid. Life is too short.
12. What is your favourite cinema?
The Capitol Theatre on Swanston Street. My grandmother used to manage it in the '60s, and although it's been closed to the public for ages, it still gets wheeled out for film festivals now and then. The 1920s art deco interior is breathtaking.
http://photos.cinematreasures.org/production/photos/16906/1311375218/large.jpg?1311375218
13. What is your favourite cinema food?
Choc tops. Specifically, chilli chocolate from Cinema Nova.
14. How many films do you own on videotape (VHS or Betamax)?
Probably about a dozen (no betamax, sadly!).
15. Have you ever seen a laserdisc?
No, but I'd love to. They look so weird.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LaserDisc
16. Who is Francis Ford Coppola and why should we care about him?
I dunno. I didn't like The Godfather.
17. Did you honestly like any of the Star Wars prequels?
They were okay. Revenge of the Sith was the best.
18. What film that you have never seen do you most want to see?
I've been trying to see Fahrenheit 451 for years! It's not that hard to find, I've just never gotten around to it.
19. Choose a random Nick's poster and name a film you think they would enjoy (and explain why).
Laird—Winter Light. Swedish film about a priest wrestling with his faith whilst tending to a declining congregation. Not sure if subtitles are your thing, but I think you'd like it.
20. Would Stui like this film?
No.
21. You're having a movie night with Tannin, Swoop42, Think Positive and pietillidie. You need to choose a film that everyone (including you) will enjoy. What is it?
Lol, how drunk was I when I wrote this? Um, I dunno. Can't go wrong with Rear Window, right? You all like Hitchcock, don't you?
(This is of course a hypothetical question, as none of you would ever let me choose the film. )
22. What film would you feel most uncomfortable about watching with your parents?
Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom. Might be a good one to go with if I ever want to put my beliefs about inheritance into practice.
23. What film do you most refuse to watch on principle?
Die Hard. You'd have to prise my eyelids open, Clockwork Orange style. |

Die Hard!? It's the pinnacle of the 80s action genre (along wtth Lethal Weapon) . Loved by both critics and fans (92% Fresh on RT). Do yourself a favour and drop the prejudice, you'll love it.
As for Sandler, Happy Gilmore is pretty awesome, watch that if you haven't already. |

But why would you bother? Like most films-of-the-book, it was rather poor, and the book wasn't particularly good in the first place. (You read Bradbury for his language, mostly, and obviously language never makes it into films.) Fahrenheit 451 was one of those odd-bod science fiction stories which, for some reason, suddenly explode into the consciousness of people outside the genre. Nobody knows why this happens, it just does, and practically never is it a notable or especially worthwhile example of the genre, it's just the one that happened to have the right twist at the right time. Still, there have certainly been worse films, so I guess if you've got nothing else on and it's a slow night at Nick's .....

Please tell me you are joking. If you seriously expected me to watch that sort of shit for more than five minutes, I'd suddenly discover urgent matters needing my personal attention elsewhere, such as feeding the cat, going to the supermarket, or washing my car.

I would have let you choose the film without hesitation, and expected to enjoy whatever you selected as of right. How bad was my judgment?! In fact I might still let you choose the film, but only if the single alternative was letting TP choose it. Then it would be feed the car and wash the cat time again. _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |
