Post subject: Tragedy in CairnsReply with quote

By all accounts a 34 year old female is responsible for the deaths of eight children in a suburb of Cairns.
It appers all eight victims were siblings and were stabbed. The location was their home. Reports indicate the ages ranged from 18 months to 15 years.
This is horrific.

Kids rang in age from 18 months to 15 years, all siblings.

Mum has her own wound in the chest and has been taken to Hospital in a stable condition.

Apparently they're a torres st islander family.

Horrible stuff at any time, so close to Christmas.................

Crying or Very sad

Four times worse than the Sydney one.

Bet you a million dollars it doesn't go to 17 pages.

^

Course not. Unfortunately Domestic Violence is way more common than 17 hour Terrorist sieges.

That would be domestic violence that leaves 8 people dead?

Domestic violence is very much more common and therefore a much greater issue than terrorism in this country.
Pity it isn't treated this way.

For context, I was specifically responding to Tannin's comment about betting it wouldn't go to 17 pages.

Having said that, I'll agree that having 8 kids all killed in one instance is (thankfully) pretty rare but this is a horrible tragedy that happened before anyone was aware it was in play, unlike the Martin Place business which had 17 hours to attract worldwide attention as it played out, with the novelty factor of being the first terrorist attack on Australian Soil.

We get domestic sieges all the time that often end up with as many people dead as in Martin place, but you don't get multiple TV networks all camped outside.

This case may play out for a few days at most, but will be lucky to get a single page let alone 17.

Is that to say it's less of a tragedy? **** no. It's just not going to attract as much attention, sell as many papers, TV ratings, website clicks etc.

In the article, it says that mum was 34.
Another sibling of the dead kids came home to find them all. He is 20.
The maths make me feel sad even without the deaths.

Looking messy.

No suspects, yet no one else should be worried. 1 of the kids was not a sibling of the others, but was related.

Police are asking people to chill a bit and saying there's some very unhelpful social media posts happening.

As the kids are all Torres St Islanders they won't be releasing names until all the relatives have been advised.

The fact that all the media reporting the incident that I've seen all throw to advertising Lifeline throws that this is a domestic situation. I can get capping yourself, but not taking family with you.

Me too.

Still, we don't know much yet.

Very very sad.
