In the comp there are several big strong forwards and i mention 4 altho there are more
At Sydney Buddy and Tippet who on their day a Clarkes crane wont budge them
Hawks have Jarrod Roughead with similar strength to gather contested mark
Tom Hawkins follows these guys in strength at contested marking

Now our Trav who play,s simalar to Tippet using body strength to mark in a pack or
mano mano and admittedly has some shockers but like those other 4 when he is on
he,s unstoppable

With Reid (altho club optomistic) is an unsure quality of form/fitness so what experienced
tall goes fwd as back up--a lighter fitter White?? Does Young float fwd,
Or will it be Greenwoods (known goal scorer) Varcoe as mediums or Jamie Elliott to crumb and mark

I'd like us to play both Witts and Grundy with them each spending time in the goal square.

Totaly agree and when i first followed footy late 50,s that was the role of resting ruck
(Bob Johnston in Melbourne 1955-1964 glory days) and before coaching Hawks to their first flag in 1961 John Kennedy.
These guys rested in one fwd pocket ,the other had resting rover
Watching Demons beat us in a few GF,s and other games i used to go right off seeing Big Bob pluck the pill and goal

Know its a different game now but tall rucks are not just there to tap IMO

Both Witts and Grundy are mobile enough to play together.

The thing is, in the modern game the only time players are in their set positions is at a centre bounce, the rest of the game it's 30+ players in a pack around the ball.

Sorry I got a little carried away and yes set positions are optional kinda
Witts in particulare is learning that he has a body of some size and
will be better around goals when he reaches maturity as even now
he shepards well

Grundy a different player who seems to work better further out
What lies ahead with those two excites me

I still rate Don Scott as the best all round key on baller and forward player. He could drop back into the forward line and dominate. Travis is too inconsistent for my liking. We need better bang for our Bucks.

Get off the drugs. Matthews was the Hawk who did that, Scott averaged .44 goals per game over his career, Peter Moore averaged .98, Simon Madden averaged 1.52.

It's not all in the figures stui, although I do agree there is a clear difference - Scott exuded menacing purpose - that has an effect which can't be measured.

Scott was a tad before my time but I agree we need to see more from Travis, he was borderline pathetic last season considering his ability, the difference between his best and worst is vast and let's not forget that his best just isn't that good (with his goal kicking factored in, his best return has been 7 goals!) not as good as some anyway, it's part of the reason I wanted him put up for trade this year, he just isn't worth what we're paying him.

Don Scott used to carry a man-bag. He also wore cravats.
I don't rate people who wear cravats.

Then you simply don't understand the English psyche at all. My grandfather came from the English 'minor nobility'.

He wore cravats with diamond stick pins, and on special occasions frilly fronted shirts.

BUT

He was a holy terror when roused, a man's man and a good 'mate' as well, for the English dress sense is an innate part of their culture. Part of what defines their 'origins' and has nothing whatsoever to do with their reliability or masculinity.

Scott exuded menacing purpose in an era when you could belt blokes and get away with it, playing in the ruck at similar height and weight to Pendles with 10% of the skill.

I'll give credit where it's due, he was a good ruckman and follower but contested marking anywhere on the ground was not his forte. Key forward? If he went to the goal square he risked being arrested for impersonating a full forward.

yep get off em hiss
never got more than 19 goals in a year

that's a handy contribution at best but you can't say its anywhere near dominating
good ordinary player that's all
wouldn't get a game today in our squad so stop talking about him
