Phillip Hughes has died as a result of the injuries he sustained when struck by a bouncer on Tuesday, Cricket Australia has confirmed. He was 25.

Team doctor Peter Brukner confirmed the news in a statement released on Thursday afternoon.

"It is my sad duty to inform you that a short time ago Phillip Hughes passed away," Brukner said. "He never regained consciousness following his injury on Tuesday. He was not in pain before he passed and was surrounded by his family and close friends.

"As a cricket community we mourn his loss and extend our deepest sympathies to Phillip's family and friends at this incredibly sad time. Cricket Australia kindly asks that the privacy of the Hughes family, players and staff be respected."

Players, coaches and other friends had been in and out of St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney throughout Wednesday and Thursday, visiting Hughes and supporting his family, and each other. Australia's captain Michael Clarke, a close friend of Hughes, had been at the hospital until after midnight on Wednesday night and returned at about 6am on Thursday.

Heart breaking stuff. On the cusp of a test recall, 63 not out, next thing you know you lose your life. Just crazy.

Shows that life is precious and can end for no apparent reason in a blink of an eye. Everyone give your loved ones a hug and tell them you love them. RIP Phil.

Sports doctor Peter Larkins: "It's really a matter of millimetres and the bad luck of the actual site of the impact. "It's very critical what part of the brain gets hit, you can actually just get a bruised brain or simply a crack in the skull when you get hit in certain parts of the head and not have anything as serious as Phillip has got. In this case it's hit a particular artery at the base of the neck that has burst.

So it's like bursting a water-main and there's just an incredible release of blood from the burst artery and that's where the bleeding in the brain, the cerebral haemorrhage, occurs."

So very sad to hear, thoughts and prayers are with family and friends, but also Sean Abbott who also must be feeling pretty bad and in need of some much needed comfort.

Gone way too soon. RIP Phil Hughes.

Just wasn't expecting that. In this day and age you just don't expect a young kid like that to fail to recover once he's in hospital with the very best doctors attending him, even though he was in an induced coma, thats a relatively common medical tactic these days, I just didn't see that coming. The kid was a real shot at making his way back to the test side with Clark's absence, and at 63 not out it looked like the small Cinderella story was gonna happen...
I feel terrible for young Abbot, a lot of kids wouldnt make their way past that, and I hope he has good people around him. Freak accident doesn't begin to describe how ridiculously random it was.

Devastating news. I feel gut wrenched & shocked. How terribly, terribly sad.

Condolences & deepest sympathy to his family, friends & team-mates.

I doubt Abbott will play Cricket again.

I would think it be very hard to come back to Cricket when a Bouncer you Bowled had Killed someone accidentally
