Phillip Hughes has been taken to hospital after a sickening blow to the head left him motionless on the SCG pitch on day one of the Sheffield Shield match between New South Wales and South Australia.

Three ambulances and a medivac helicopter attended to 25-year-old Hughes after he was struck midway through the day. Play was suspended when he left the field and then abandoned after he was conveyed to St Vincent's Hospital by ambulance. Players and officials were comforted at pitchside as Hughes was treated.

Even though I'm not a big cricket supporter that's terrible to hear!

I hope the emergency surgery he's having is a success as reported on the news. I wish him all the best!

He's just very unlucky especially since he was wearing a cricket helmet as well.

I haven't heard of other cases like this unless someone can shed some light on whether this has happened before.

The ball hit him on the back of the head just below the helmet. He played a pull shot to a bouncer and got through the shot before the ball got to him and copped it on the back of the head.

He stood there after being hit for a couple of seconds, then leaned forward and fell face first onto the ground.

Best wishes Phil, hope it all goes well.

Getting hit in the back of the head is the worst possible place to get hit. There's a reason it's illegal in pretty much all combat sports. It's also what kills the people who get 'king hit' when they hit the footpath/gutter falling backwards.

I really hope he's alright.

Phil Hughes remains in a critical condition in intensive care and on life support in an induced coma tonight following emergency surgery in a Sydney hospital.

The next 24 to 48 hours will be crucial for Hughes with all thoughts turning to the batsman's welfare. The Sheffield Shield match has been abandoned by mutual agreement between both teams' captain and coach.

I just feel numb, completely numb. RIP Phillip, and condolences to your family, friends & team mates.

And my thoughts are also with Sean Abbott. I hope he can recover from what was just a tragic accident, that could have happened to any batsman, in any game, at any level.
