Well, only if you are beset by a particularly entrenched kind of literalism.

How about "This one never really got off the ground"? Or "This one never reached any real level of excitement as a contest"? Etc etc.

One doesn't need 'literalism' to understand what "This one was over before it started." means.

Oh, by the way, same with "Sometimes 20/20 games are like that." They are rarely to never 'like that'. T20 cricket is the most unpredictable of the 3 International forms of the game - being able to be swung dramatically, one way or another, by one or two of the (up to) 40 overs).
