I guess my point is that all this barrage of advertising crap we get is all designed to get money from fans. That ain't going to stop, it's only going to get worse. I'm all for players being well paid, and I understand we had to play big games at large stadiums, but seriously we have gone too far. There are now hundreds of (mainly) blokes in suits earning big money from our game, but not really making the game any better. In fact, they're killing the goose that lays the golden eggs. I know the game is actually dying because I rarely see kids wearing footy jumpers anymore.

Corporate greed risks killing the game.

I suspect only a big fall in crowd attendances next year will spur the AFL to listen to fans. The decision all those years ago to abandon suburban grounds resulted, inevitably, in the homogenisation of the game. Clubs are now franchises not representatives of communities. The AFL has treated fans with utter contempt in the way they have destroyed the sense of 'home' at the MCG and Docklands. Their insane scheduling, insulting pre-game/half-time 'entertainment', constant barraging of advertising, high prices and heavy handed policing of crowd behaviour have all contributed to a rather soulless experience going to the footy nowadays. Last year, for the first time in my life, despite being a Legends member with a reserve seat and living only 10 mins walk from the MCG, I chose to stay at home and watch my beloved Magpies on TV several times, instead of going to the game. Something is seriously wrong.

Well I didn't stop going to games, but this pretty much spells out what I wrote in the survey that came with the membership emails!

Why are you a member? Because I go to the footy every week with my daughter and I want a decent seat, so I pay for it, and I want a chance to go to the GF if we make it so I pay the premium. Is it value? NO. Why not? Because other clubs have a cheaper level for the same benefit, and we get nothing extra for the extra dosh. Hate seeing the lets get more members over and over, pure greed. Look after the ones you have.

I'm loud and passionate, attend every game I can, and so many times I've wanted to move a bay over to help fill that big gap behind the cheer squad!

Great article Joffa. Seems to be more about tv rights than fans attending. Love the rational of the entry for interstate etc.

Dare I say it? If it's a she sack her, and get an nice Aussie bogan in there, (Joffa would me calling you this offend!) I want vic park back, with floggers, and good natured banter, (and even the toilets smelt better than the ones behind the cheers squad at the MCG!) I don't want the dance troop, or the kiss cam, and I sure as hell don't want that bloody loud a meter! All we need is C O L L L L L I N G G G G W O O O O O D D D loud and long. Bring back the passion. Stop those fricken security guards trawling up and down every time a goal is kicked, keep opposition fans out of our cheering end.

And ban leggings Wink

"Chant Leaders" with megaphones.
Chants in full swing whilst the game is in progress.
Certain designated "supporter groups".

The word "contrived" would come to mind if these things were to be introduced at the footy.
What works for soccer, works for soccer. Good for soccer. It's a different game.

For footy, just let the atmosphere build naturally, - as it has always been until recently.

(Sorry David, not trying to be a smart-arse, but you have missed the point....... It's about getting back to one's roots, not following others' leads.)
But agree 100% with your paragraph responding to Rudeboy.

There's your problem.

Once the game starts to employ people whose sole purpose is to 'enhance' the game day atmosphere then we're in trouble. People given those roles are going to change things simply to justify what it says on their business card.

It's hard to believe that people who love this game really think the way to improve it is to make the fan experiences more like the experience of other sports, you know the sports we rejected to support footy. It's the worse kind of cultural cringe.

Great article, Joffa, thanks for posting. I'm not usually one to endorse copying other sports, but in this case we could do worse than follow the A-League model. If it works for them, why not us?

You've missed the point David.
We don't need to copy soccer - we HAD atmosphere in spades until recently.......

I haven't missed the point at all. I read the article. Connolly's argument is that the A-League are currently permitting an atmosphere that is almost extinct now in the AFL. Whatever they're doing is working. My point is that, as much as I generally loathe 'copying' aspects of other codes, we could do a lot worse than to follow their lead.

Rudeboy, I fear that there will be no drastic decline in attendance. Much more likely that the game is just going to suffer a long, slow death. By the time the administration accepts that something's gone terribly wrong, it'll be too late. The culture of football attendance that's been passed on through generations will be gone, and all that will remain will be increasingly desperate attempts to boost interest through temporary, artificial gimmicks. It won't work, because you can't fake culture. It's either there or it isn't.

Culture is a living breathing sense which is created by leaders. It can become toxic, as in now, but it can quickly recover. That's the challenge for all organisations.

Thing is, everyone at that soccer game was a fan of either team, we can't expect that level of passion when we allow the MCC members in to every MCG match.

I'm a big soccer fan and from an ethnic back ground, so upfront. What I don't want to see at an AFL game are flares, arm in arm chanting why backs to the game jumping up and down all night, 13-17 yo ethic wannabes emulating what goes on in overseas "football" and frankly not even there to see a sporting event!

Let me be clear on this.

Soccer is also that boring the crowd need to entertain themselves, especially low level A league soccer, I don't mind the fair dinkum stuff though, I'm a fan of WC soccer, the skill on display is second to none, and the drama can be epic.

Sorry Joffa ol son, but personally I find soccer as boring as batshit. I have watched a fair bit, just cannot get into it, these nil all draws, what you sit on your arse for ninety mins whatever, to watch no scoring .?? And games are rarely decided by big scores, you get two goals up,and its nearly game over, no its just not for me. Though I grant you those UK fans get pretty worked up, how they can sing for an entire game is beyond me. Perhaps im too much of an aussie rules fan, I don't like rugby much either, I find our game the most spectacular in the world of football, bar none.

Well joffa
I think Rohan has been reading Nicks!
We need a cultural revolution but I'm not
sure where it is coming from!
I will be there standing behind the barrackers
end, yelling and screaming but the security guards
will be standing next to me, looking me up and down.

I agree that soccer is boring , and they have to entertain themselves,
We need to follow powers lead and n get ourselves a decent song , like, born and raised in black n white For before the game as the players warm up, seating need to be like interstate where our fans r together ,n opposition at one end So that when song is played There would be a mass of black n white with scarves n flags raised,
Piss off loud o metre and kiss cam.

I expect all the usual crap responses, so instead of using your efforts on being a smart arse, try coming up with alteratives.
