Yes, on the main board.

Gough was a Pies man by virtue of Eye-browzies being a Bluebagger.

Really sad to hear that! Loved that era of politics especially Gough! The Labour goverment had many great ideas at the time and introduced some cornerstone policies that are still with us today - equal pay for the sexes, minimun wage, low cost university fees and many more, pity we lost the wool industry to sinthetic fibres during his time and we did have a recession and yes by the way we lost John Greenings freekish abilities as well! RIP Sir Whitlam

Gough Whitlam, everything modern politics is lacking. A truly great statesman.

All great posts above. Concur with all of them.

The "It's Time" chorus - still inspiring after all these years. Maybe we could use it the way Port use "Never Tear Us Apart" (with a few word changes).

There goes a great man, one that changed us forever.
Gough was a hero to me; a man with great vision - a vision of social justice, fairness and decency. So many things we take for granted today, like universal health care, were introduced by Gough's first government. He ended conscription, introduced free education, set up SBS, introduced land rights, gave women a voice.....I could go on. He also made Australia exciting.

Sure his government was a shambles in the end, but Gough, unlike anybody before or after him, tapped the inner decency of Australians. He gave the poor, the newly arrived and the unloved members of society a voice.

Gough brought about a revolution in Australia; one that we certainly needed. It was a revolution of fairness and real opportunity. After the years and years of stultifying, Liberal/Country party torpor, Gough gave Australians from the other side of the tracks, a chance to play on a level playing field. The Australians of the 70's will never forget what a depth change he brought and those born in the 80s and beyond, benefit from his grand vision.

Vale Edward Gough Whitlam. Rest in peace Comrade.

Gough was an honourable man and a hero to many, myself included.
Modern politicians would do well to take his example on board.
Not sure they will though. Too busy appealing to greed and fear.
Great to see him with the pies jumper back in the 60s. right up there with our number 1 ticket holder in 1990, Mr Keating.

Post subject: A Great Australian and Magpie SupporterReply with quote

To list the achievements of Gough Whitlam would require volumes and so I just wanted to highlight some of the shared desires of the CFC and Gough.

Being a child of the Vietnam War conscription I am reminded of him being the first Australian PM to direct our foreign policy for Australia and not a puppet of a large partner. Collingwood Football Club does things the Magpies' Way and whilst part of the AFL and VFL, those organisations know we don't follow blindly but question and if pushed, we are not shy in voicing our disapproval.

The Magpies have always had a social conscience and Gough also did more to address the class structure by providing universal health care, free tertiary study and removing the heavy duties average Australians were forced to pay as support for lazy and wasteful businesses. Everyone deserves opportunity and our common wealth is increased by doing it, and although his vision was cut short, many of the achievements are continued to be viewed as rights regardless of what the Mad Monk wants to do.

Eddie has presided over the increased facility to assist those less fortunate than ourselves, and we are proud of these achievements and the opportunities they provide.
