At the interveiw after the 5 way player shuffle DH was asked what we require going into
draft and he replied --a mid fielder of fwd.
We have Steele,Pendles, the emerging Adams plus Greenwood with Swan to use also
Fwds Elliott,Trav,Varcoe etc fwd
IMHO we need a back up ruckman if Witts ,Grundy get injured, reported or lose form
To rely on Jess White not best solution

I reckon we're fine for ruck stocks with:

Witts
Grundy
White
Gault
Cox
Keeffe (last resort)

If the club wants more insurance, better to rookie an ageing ruckman, so they don't take a spot on our list, as they did with Hudson.

Actualy Gault interesting as his
first up game against quality
opporsition (Hawks) he plucked
a mark then goaled & later got one
from general play so wonder if he
could be a Leroy Brown in the
future

i thought we were pretty committed to playing two ruckman (Grundy and Witts). I think once they mature that would be the system with one of them working really hard for the last 5 mins of third and first 5 mins of the last quarter before being subbed off leaving the remaining guy to run out the match.

Of course for this to work, they both have to get better and covering ground so that their opponent doesnt torch them when they are resting up forward. Could Grundy develop into a ruck rover so they are both playing in the middle sometimes (like goodes used to do)?

He could but, but he would need to do some significant work on his tank. He was running out of steam most games come the the 4th.

At a coterie event recently, and Eade mentioned he has been surprised at the skills and his ability to read the play. He mentioned he would not be surprised if he played a handful of AFL games in 2015!

Gault may well be the surprise packet. Injury issues have meant he hasn't yet had a full preseason so still lots of development in his fitness and body.

For mine, does some of his best work at VFL when thrown into the ruck. Has a good leap and moves around the ground well. At a minimum, think he can put considerable pressure on White to either perform or lose his senior place.

Yeah, if only he'd had a crack at AFL as a 20 year old, he may well have made it.

Absolutely spot on.
He is the back up ruck now - not forward and he will put serious pressure on Witts and Grundy, especially if he becomes a goal kicker.

Hine didn't actually say this. He wouldn't be a gun recruiter if he did.

A backup ruckman? I agree that we may need one, as we actually don't have any other than part-timers, but it's a low priority. We can maybe pick up an experienced VFL player in the Rookie draft. I certainly wouldn't be using a National draft pick to take a backup ruckman, we're set well into the future for starters.

We do have two rucks that are capable of starting as the number 1. So we actually need them both to be injured at the same time to need a backup. We'd be fine with either Grundy or Witts as first with backup from a forward/ruck. So while we could do with an experienced backup, it's not a high priority.

Last year Bucks more-or-less said that the expectation is that they use a single ruckman in most games with a part-timer to help out, and that the then-current dual ruck starting combo was temporary. He didn't quite say that they were playing W&G together because neither one was developed enough to play really well for a whole game solo yet, and he didn't quite say that the two were playing together because the ruckman-forward types weren't doing enough and he didn't quite say that they were using both because of lack of marking power up front with Reid out for so long, but those three things were implied in the context.

One game isn't much to make a judgment on, but FWIW Gault impressed me. If he can play like that every week, White should only play when Reid is not available.

^^Yeah, playing two rucks was never by design. Bucks always said that the preference was to play one when Reid returned. Irresistible form by Grundy and Witts could change that though.
