Umm, sorry to pick you up on semantics mate but........

Quote:
A metaphor is a figure of speech that describes a subject by asserting that it is, on some point of comparison, the same as another otherwise unrelated object. It is a figure of speech comparing two unlike things without using either "like" or "as". It is not to be mistaken with a simile which does use "like" or "as" in comparisons. Metaphor is a type of analogy and is closely related to other rhetorical figures of speech that achieve their effects via association, comparison or resemblance including allegory, hyperbole, and simile.

One of the most prominent examples of a metaphor in English literature is the All the world's a stage monologue from As You Like It:

All the world's a stage,🗿🗿
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances;
—William Shakespeare, As You Like It, 2/7[1]

This quotation contains a metaphor because the world is not literally a stage. By figuratively asserting that the world is a stage, Shakespeare uses the points of comparison between the world and a stage to convey an understanding about the mechanics of the world and the lives of the people within it.

Umm, sorry to pick you up on semantics mate but...

A metaphor is a figure of speech that uses one thing to mean another and makes a comparison between the two.

All the world's a stage,🗿🗿
And all the men and women merely players
They have their exits and their entrances;
—William Shakespeare, As You Like It, 2/7[1]

The world is a stage, we are but players never knowing when the curtain will fall; ...<<<comparison.

An analogy is comparable to metaphor in that it shows how two different things are similar, but it’s more complex than that.

An analogy demonstrate how two things are alike by pointing out shared characteristics, with the goal of showing that if two things are similar in some ways, they are similar in other ways as well.

I will "shirt-front" Putin! <<analogy

What comparison was Abbott making?

OK, this discussion is going places where I have minimal expertise and even less interest. I was absent the day they taught Grammar at Finley High so forget I said anything.

I was talking about Abbott's lack of understanding of the words he uses and what he hopes to gain by beating his chest like an outraged school-yard bully<<< (metaphor)
Comparing AFL shirt-fronts with Rugby shirt-fronts and suggesting that poor ole Tony is just misunderstood is a mixed metaphor and does little to shed light on the real issue and only demonstrates his total lack of skill in communicating like a statesman!

p.s
if claim you have little interest and expertise in grammar, please don't try and pick me up on semantics!

I have less interest than expertise, and when I do see someone using semantics incorrectly I'll sometimes bite despite myself, but i quickly run out of interest again.

"Metaphorically speaking" is a common expression, usually used when someone is making the point that they aren't speaking literally. If you're going to hang your hat on that to prove Bud is a dickhead, your hat is going straight to the floor.

Abbott doesn't need my help to prove he's a dick-head.

Hmmm...
... an Oxford educated Englishman (religious scholarship) with a Boxing Blue, failed priest and famed budgie smuggler against a Russian bear with a black-belt and a love of hunting.

I can't begin to guess who'd win that one ...Rolling Eyes <<<irony

The irony is that I'd actually love to see Putin shirt-fronted (in the AFL sense), literally or metaphorically. But I'd rather see it done by someone who can do it, not a little twerp who'll bounce right off and then hide under a chair until it's all over.

The irony is that the shirt-front has disappeared from Aussie rules
...but you can't blame English Tony for not knowing that!
He couldn't remember the name of the Socceroos Captain at the last World Cup, or that Canadian's don't come from Canadia!

Says the Neanderthal who vociferously supported the Iraq War which caused the deaths of 200,000-X00,000 people and 1-3M refugees and gawd knows what followed.

I did, however, LOL at the photo:

Serial coward and refugee women and children bully Tony Abbott pretending to be macho at an anti-competitive, non-value-added, grossly under-taxed, economy-distorting, quality career-destroying production site of one of his employers.

I'd pay to see this one, get them in a cage together, classic striker vs grappler match up.

Well if you ever watch UFC you'll know the grappler generally wins.

Putin would have him in a submission hold quick smart.

Game over.
