The paperwork for the five-club mega trade that was expected to deliver Beams to the Gabba yesterday was not lodged with the AFL before 5pm, ensuring the long-running saga will continue into another day.

But it is expected to be signed, sealed and delivered this morning.

Brisbane will receive Beams and pick 67 at next month’s draft from the Pies with picks 5, 25 and Lions midfielder Jack Crisp going to Collingwood.

...

The five-club deal would also see:

• North Melbourne receive pick 25 from Collingwood (obtained from Brisbane) for midfielder Levi Greenwood.

• Collingwood defender Heritier Lumumba going to Melbourne.

• Melbourne forward Mitch Clark going to Geelong.

• Geelong midfielder Travis Varcoe going to Collingwood.

No mention of picks 30 and 48 there.

The Beams trade could go ahead separately from the other deals but Collingwood is insisting on pushing them through together.

I wonder why we insist they go through at the same time though?

Could possibly be that we're after either pick 3 or 23 from Melbourne, but we don't trust them. Confused

could the club be so sinister as to stall it in the hope that something else crops up? apparently, it's varcoe's contract which is holding things up. now being reported it could be tomorrow when things get finalised.

If we end up giving Varcoe 4 years then we are truly desperate.

Geelong can keep him if that's what he wants.

Three years would be generous for him.

Honestly we need to be getting this deal done today if we are to have any hope of improving our lot further by 2pm tomorrow.

If it helps, the suggestions in the media this morning were that the Varcoe delay was about whether he would accept $350K or $400K and a 3 or 4 year deal.

please no to varcoe. come on pies. he is a 3rd rate hack at best. we are better off investing 4 years in a player we get for the pick returned to us from dees for H.

Jake Niall:

"The mega-trade involving five clubs and centred around Dayne Beams, Mitch Clark, Travis Varcoe, Heritier Lumumba and Levi Greenwood is being completed at AFL headquarters.

The parties have arrived at AFL House to complete the paperwork with Beams becoming a Brisbane player in return for picks five and 25 and Lions youngster Jack Crisp going to Collinwood.

Pick 25 is being traded by the Pies to North Melbourne in exchange for Levi Greenwood, while ex-Melbourne forward Clark joins Geelong in a three-way swap – with no draft choices – for Varcoe, who joins the Pies and Melbourne-bound Lumumba.

The contractual terms with the players has been agreed in principle. Varcoe is to receive a three-year deal with Magpies and Greenwood four years. Lumumba is receiving a new four-year deal with Melbourne.

Pick 67 goes to Brisbane from Collingwood, a pick that the Pies would not have used.

The Clark-Varcoe-Lumumba deal, while separated from the Beams trade, is linked because Collingwood could not trade Varcoe in without trading Beams out and would not let Beams go unless it had Varcoe coming in. And this required the release of Lumumba.

After nine days of negotiations, the parties eventually agreed the terms and did the five-way deal together.

The central part was Collingwood's acceptance that it would receive pick 5, 25 and Crisp (in effect, 5, Greenwood and Crisp) for Beams."

Now that I can happily call Beams a one way downhill skier, we have comprehensively won that deal (pending injuries etc).
