According to a tweet at 12.41 pm re-posted in the AFL blog, "James Hird just left Essendon and says he is still the coach of the club".

Or, maybe not: from the AFL's live blog at 12.06pm: "UNCONFIRMED: The Herald Sun reporting that James Hird has not been sacked. Fairfax v News, not for the first time."

I am confused. Are you?

Edit: I think the AFL is referring to this:

"UPDATE: ESSENDON has denied reports that coach James Hird has been sacked.

Responding to reports that Hird had been sacked, Essendon spokesman Justin Rodski said at noon: "No. That is wrong."

Hird is currently in a meeting with club bosses at their headquarters in Tullamarine over his future."

See the start of this report - http://www.news.com.au/sport/afl/james-hird-defies-essendon-and-lodges-appeal-against-asada-in-full-federal-court/story-fndv8gad-1227077455172

Is this necessarily incompatible with Wilson's piece, though? She didn't say that Hird had been sacked, she said he'd been given the option to stand down. Effectively the same thing, of course, but the specific wording both permits the club to say that they haven't sacked him and for him to officially remain coach until whatever deadline they've set for him.

I guess we'll find out the real story soon. I know what I'm hoping for.

Caro reporting Hird's gone but no one else is reporting that this is the case at the moment.

One way or another I think he's gone whether it's today, tomorrow or next week. How can he stay now?

and if Hird goes, Thompson stays. Good news for Essendon, bad for everyone else.

He is being spoken to by the board ATM apparently. He would be trying to get every last cent he can because after this he is unemployable for any self respecting organization.
I guess his next move would be to sell his story to a media outlet for a huge sum.
Look blind Freddie can see he can't possibly think he has the players faith to coach them. After the senior players pleaded with him not to continue to drag this out any further and he refused.
I'm guessing the senior players made it clear to the board they wouldn't play for Hird after this.
It's all about him and his ego nothing more nothing less.

Is Thompson himself completely out of the woods regarding ASADA?

One would think that if he's had any involvement—and he's already copped at least a token whack from the AFL over the saga—he'll be sitting on the sidelines for at least a little while. Bombers might need a plan C.

I guess it's back into the fridge with you Champagne....

So where does that leave Thompson? Maybe he should just cut to the chase and sign with GCS's

So this will drag on for at least another week.

The board is probably getting legal advice on the ramifications (I understood he retired a few years ago) concerning at least these questions I would have thought:

1. Can they sack Hird?
2. How much will it cost to pay him out?
3. Does he have grounds for "Unfair dismissal"?
3.1 If so, how much might that cost the club?
4. Where does this fit for total spend on the footy department & what are the implications?

What a shame, Essendon grew a brain and ended the dumb experiment with James Hird, which no doubt means that Bomber will be coach and in turn, that we'll be watching Essendumb climb into the four from our position way down the ladder. A happy day for the Blind Brigade, and a dark one for Collingwood as we'll see over the next few seasons.
