The way footy is played today, the days of snipers and thugs are over and that's a good thing.

However, there's still plenty of room for hard players.

Goldsack for us is as hard as a cats head but he's an introvert. He will tackle and chase and hurt players when he does it, but he's about as intimidating as the paddle pop lion. And that's not a criticism of Goldie, he's about our hardest player so he's on top of a very soft tower.

I'm not suggesting our players are soft. But do we have any players who would make opposition players think twice about stepping in front of?
Would you get between Luke Hodge and a football? He's no thug but he's hard in a way that Sellwood wishes he was.

Maxwell recognised that we lacked in this area and tried to artificially provide what we lacked. Credit Maxy, but not your gig.

We need some hard bodied nasty pricks who will lead the way on field and shame others into following.

So, who's out there available?

Poaching some fringe Hawks in Cheney, Woodward or Hallahan. All have a bit of grunt.

Hodge, Mitchell and Lewis amongst others are some of the main reasons why we struggle to beat Hawthorn.

All are prepared to win the hard ball over and over again and don't mind playing on the edge to do it and unsettle the opposition in the process.

As good as Pendles, Beams, Swan and Sidebottom are none have the natural aggression as the above 3 and simply can't match the hawks for hardness for the length of a match.

We need to get harder and have players who are willing to risk a tribunal ban in the process of playing a harder brand of football.

You know you're struggling for hardness when sidey is the one delivering the off the ball bumps.

They say Petracca is hard at it but he's likely to go at pick 1 or 2 in the draft. Some have suggested Lonergan from the suns as part of a trade for Beams. He's a slightly taller version of Adams and a ball of muscle.

Sure he goes in hard but he's a dumb footballer who's not up to AFL standard in every other area of his game.

In regards to Stui's post, I agree we really lack players who are hard nuts in contrast to Hawthorn. The 1990 team resembles a side that wasn't necessarily the most talented but it was as tough as they come and they worked really well as a team and I think that we need to partially aspire to this to challenge for our next flag but of course with more talent as well.

If only Cloke could play with a bit more mongrel? He's a big strong bastard, but needs to put the fear of god into his opponents. But I guess at this stage of his career that aint going to happen now.

Mitch Clark, if we get him, is big, strong and tough. Frost could develop into an enforcer down back. Adams is as hard as they come in the midfield, but he's not big enough to smash packs open. Perhaps Marley Williams could become our midfield brute. I've also got hopes that Marsh can eventually become a smash and crash midfielder with blitzkreig pace.

So I guess we've got the makings of some hard nosed tough players and who knows what Freeman and Scharenberg are like, as they'll take a couple of years to settle into the side anyway.

What? Didn't Stevic get a medal yesterday?! WTF?
Dog Schmitt just as unlucky as Ceglar, Cheney, Shitmakers and Sewell not to be up on the dias as well.

Brodie Grundy has everything it takes to be our bash and crash intimidator. He's big, he's already strong and getting stronger, he's shown aggression, he's shown silliness and the umps already don't like him, basically everything you need in a hard man.

Once he gets his fitness base up to scratch and establishes himself as a key player I'd be expecting him to really start crashing packs and hurting blokes. I can't wait either.

Yep, I agree. Get the two Mitches. Clark, mongrel big bastard and talented. Vicious. I hate to say it because he reminds me of an orc and he was carlton, but I'd also like to get Robinson. He's a prick of thing, hard as hell though. Second chance just may be what he needs to turn his life around and his footy to take a step up. It really doesn't need much, he's a beauty.
