Learn to play "unsociable" footy.

Hawthorn beat Sydney up for the first 2 qrts. It was nice to watch such aggression. They made Sydney earn every possession.

The club needs some Agro.

This site needs less.

But they were recruited to fill holes and roles.

Get what you pay for and the club clearly wanted to invest in high draft picks. I wasn't a fan of recruiting the guys you've listed but they came at next to no cost.

I understand that - I guess the point was around Hawthorn are at one end of the trading game and we're at the other. Since the Prelim they've gone and got Gunston, Lake and McEvoy in trades and free agency. Our ability to pick up players in the last few years (and I'll extend this outward to include such gems as Anthony Corrie) has been awful. In terms of something we can learn, it's to get active in trade week and ask what is available. If Hawthorn can do it, we can surely up the quality from White and Russell?

Amen to the last sentence

We seem to zone off a lot more now than actually tackle, especially against Hawthorn

It's definitely an area we can work on (though I will cede younger players in this case)

I think there's a lot of lessons we can take from today's game.

Firstly, just thinking that you can turn up and expect to win it will end in disaster as we saw from the Swans. They got massive egos after being pumped up all week and it's partially the reason why it cost them. Never be complacent in any game is one thing our side should learn and this needs to be drummed into them to consistently to be a top football side.

In regards to the actual technicals of the game I think disposal efficiency and manic tackling is the two big things to take out of today's match. Hawthorn's kicking and the ability to nearly play keepings off from the opposition is scarily good. They've been masters at it for the past few years and in contrast to them our kicking has been deplorable and the standard has dropped in the past few years. Also manic tackling still wins you games and this hasn't changed in the past few years. It was one of the key reasons why we won in 2010 and we were difficult to beat during 2010 and 2011. We need that type of tackling pressure to return to become a great side again.

Overall, Hawthorn nearly played the perfect game today as much as I hate to admit it. They were brilliant in all areas and totally humiliated the Swans and they didn't stop playing hard until the final siren. They are as good as the Geelong teams of 2007 to 2011 in my opinion now. I really thought we would be the next big thing after Geelong but sadly it was short-lived Sad

We can only hope to learn the lessons of 2010 and 2011 and become an even greater side when we challenge for a Premiership again.

To beat Hawthorn you need to play man on man against them and make their players force a contest or else the likes of Smith, Breust and Hill will blow you away.

It's easier said than done but zoning off them will never allow us to beat them the way they are at the moment as opposed to attempting to play man on man footy.

And part of the problem is as I've said we lose to the same way all the time. Fast break play. We clog up our forward line and then got caught on the fast break. 4 perfect kicks and a Gunston or a Shiels is having a shot at goal.

The (first) loss we had to them at the MCG was embarrassing. 4 players would gang tackle a Jordan Lewis and he'd take the tackle but kick it to 3 spare blokes running free. And our skills in that situation are just lamentable - I wonder how we would go if from now on we just chased elite kicks?

We won't be able to put that kind of performance in for years, til our little twigs become mighty oaks of men. Hawk veterans pounded the swans, cheap shots, lingering hits. Made me feel ill seeing how effective it was.

Last time I remember us playing that strongly Cam was in the 2010 Preliminary Final! It was amazing to witness the side like that four years ago.

That was seriously the perfect game from us until we dropped our bundle in the last quarter so we would avoid injuries for the upcoming Grand Final. Hawthorn is the dominant team now but it won't last just like all great teams never last forever.

Get Players that are Elite Kicks

Very true dave very perceptive. Note now the dawks do all these little dinky short kicks, unmanned, and then run on, usually with one long kick. we must learn from this, this short dink play on game, these $£$%^%%$ pricks have done it for ages, im amazed other sides haven't learnt. Also, the way to play em is close manning up, no latitude, the swans gave em the earth, they must be close tagged, harassed, tackled constantly. Learn from the mongrels then beat em, it aint rocket science. Idea Idea

Pressure wins finals
Effective tackling = pressure
2010 we were elite at this young players do not have the years of preseasons to do this.
Even in 2010 our weakness was depth a lot of older players who retired that year and kids with little experience.

To play man on man with kids is a disaster waiting to happen the stronger more experienced side will always win. Zoning is the way to deal with it. However too many inexperienced kids will make too many errors.

Having more than two forwards will help Cloke and Elliot are not enough
Broomhead seems promising

the model for success is pretty simple.

Step 1. Get 5-6 elite players into your club at the same time and ride that core group to as much success as you can. Hodge, Roughhead, Lewis, Rioli, Mitchell (Franklin)

Step 2 - recruit quality role players into your side in the middle of their careers rather than the end - Lake, Hale, Gibson, Burgoyne, Gunston, MacAvoy, Sphanger (Ceglar). That is lot of quality taken from other clubs over the past 5 years by stealth!

Step 3 - hide your future father/sons so you can pick them up in the rookie draft. Langford.

Step 4 - draft for need to complement the foregoing - Isaac Smith, Bruest, Papuolo, Hill.

PS: This 4 step program also delivered us the 2010 premiership.

grew up and went to school in sydney. nsw scholarship.

2011 Rookie Draft NSW scholarship selection (Hawthorn) No. 85.

has played 19 games since being drafted, 18 of them this year (not sure how current the info is on hfc website). what the hawks do well is have patience with their players. some of their guys run around at box hill for years. a case in point, josh kennedy didn't want to do this so asked for a trade.
