Post subject: Effect of Essendon scandal on CollingwoodReply with quote

Now before I start I would ask the mods to consider the basis of this thread is the effect the Essendon scandal will have on Collingwood and other clubs.

Ok now there are 3 major issues that will directly and indirectly effect Collingwood and other clubs due to Essendons peptide scandal.

I will put the 3 of them into categories that overlap into each other at various points.

Governance - Sports science - Coaching/player welfare.

Firstly the AFL's interest in this was firstly the illicit use of banned substances but then it became a governance issue.
Hird and the club were penalized under the basis they failed in there duties of governance but also on player welfare.
Now governance inside clubs like inside business is a huge issue this day and age. All clubs have many aspects of governance and due diligence they must conduct on issues ranging from player recruitment to operational factors to licensed facilities to marketing and duty of care.
Now Essendon have been found guilty of extremely poor governance and you can bet penny to a pound that the AFL will now be all over all clubs to ensure they are operating properly and in accordance with all legislation and bylaws of the code.
Now every club will have to spend more time and money ensuring that they are completely compliant.

Secondly the sports science factor comes into the frame. Essendon can't or won't tell ASADA what substances there players used other than saying they werent illicit. Well how can they tell if they don't know what they were and if they did know they were legal why not name them ?
Ok so now every supplement and every injection for any reason needs to be recorded, vetted, approved and double checked. Now this all costs money and seeing the new equalization is coming into effect means Collingwood needs to ensure they are doing the right thing and will need to save money elsewhere or be prepared to pay even more equalization tax to ensure they are compliant without effecting other football department operations.

Thirdly a coach used to be just that a coach. Now Bucks must be a coach, an sports science overseer, a player welfare expert, and be across every thing happening to every player at all times. How can one person be able to achieve this to a high compliant standard whilst performing the main duty he was hired to do which is coach young footballers and win football games.

I read in the Australian we need to shed $1,500,000 from our football operations spend to avoid the tax. Now you can't be saving money and be expected to compliant with all these new governance issues without putting a load of trust in other people or have people willing to work for free !

Ok so now the AFL has made it very clear the buck stops with the head coach and the board so how can any club be expected to accomplish this on reduced spending in there football department or do they spend the required amount to ensure that all bases are fully covered and then be slugged by the equalization tax to fund clubs who don't have the finances to operate to these new levels of compliance.

Be certain of this the AFL will make sure all clubs are held accountable as if another episode like the Essendon one comes up the AFL won't be held liable for any future repercussion.
Put this together in its total time line of events.
Governance of clubs
Sports science
Head knocks and concusiom rule changes (brought on by the NFL former players suing the league for failure in its duty of care)
Duty of care to players and welfare
Funding of poor clubs by the wealthy to cover them.

I actually don't think we have seen the end of the cost factors that will be imposed on clubs.
How does Collingwood continue to strive to be the best club in the competition whilst being penalized financially because other clubs have failed to operate within the rules of the game and or don't have the financial means to ensure they do so ?

Seriously the fact of it is Collingwood like all clubs now have to find a way to balance the books while being held completely responsible for every player and staff member.

Good luck Eddie and co this is a pandora's box of issues that will keep changing rapidly in the coming years.

I believe we are shedding staff is to make a point to the AFLPA. The player's association just assumed that the wealthy clubs would just pay the tax, which would then enable the pauper's to employ more staff (create job for ex-players).

Hopefully, the rich clubs band together and reduce jobs to make this plan backfire, which may get the tax removed.

You could be right but I have a concern by us not resourcing our football department we are doing ourselves a disservice at the same time.
This tax is toxic its the AFL's way of making successful clubs pay to get rival clubs up to there standards while the AFL spend there money propping up GWS, Suns, Lions, Dogs etc

Collingwood do more than enough to prop up the game without having the impost of this ludicrous tax.

Consider how much poorer the game would be without our club.

And I'm sick of the crap that commentators spew forth about our 'unfair' advantage in football department spend.

Our 'advantage' is that great that we have won two flags since 1958...!

What a load of crap. Shame AFL shame!
