Post subject: Bringing back the atmosphere - Game Day Experience | |
|
Same premise as the other thread I started - being more specific about things that can be improved upon, instead of good ideas getting lost amongst multiple subjects.
One of the things killing the atmosphere at the moment, (apart from the ticketing arrangements), is the so called "game-day experience".
Here are a few of the things I find excruciating when attending the footy that need to be addressed:
We are there to watch the football, not bop along with some silly dancers wearing black & white leggings.
Not one person comes along the following week to try and get on "kiss-cam".
What does it add??
The "Holden loud- o- meter" with its artificial crowd noise actually made me swear to never buy a Holden.
The pop music leading up to each quarter stops the crowd being involved in the build-up. One of the joys of a big game is, well was, to get involved vocally leading up to the bounce.
Nobody knows the little league Auskick game is on anymore, there's too much else going on.
Those kids will remember playing for Collingwood on the MCG for the rest if their lives...... it's just that nobody watched them!!
Put 'em on the big screen??
A reserves or under 18's game as curtain raiser once in a while????
Most importantly, when employing people to shape what it means to turn up on the day and feel part of Collingwood - make sure they're lifelong Collingwood Supporters to begin with!!!!!
I've said it elsewhere, you don't attract new support with gimmicks, it's passed down. Don't (continue to) piss off the die hards...... _________________ "I am a great sage, equal of heaven.

The problem is Mr Wren with what little leverage the club has had has lead to such gimmicky crap as loud-o-meter and kiss cam.
Giving them more opportunities to make the game day experience more Collingwood will only prove to improve the situation if they get it right.
Right now they are failing miserably with what they're allowed to do. _________________ He's mad. He's bad. He's MaynHARD! |

Yeah, that's fine for Benny Gale to trod off to Brazil for inspiration, and if clubs want to put on a show, and go with what's happening at the Adelaide Oval or Carrara at the moment; good luck to 'em. And good luck in their discussions with the MCG & Etihad in that regard.
None of that is Collingwood though.
We don't need a prompt to tell us when to cheer.
We don't need rock/pop/dance music as pre-game entertainment.
We don't need a trumpet to tell us we've scored.
We don't need laser light shows, dancers, gimmicks, gimmicks, gimmicks......
Back to basics is what would please us.
Make it feel like we're a supporter going to the footy, not a consumer attending an event. _________________ "I am a great sage, equal of heaven.

That article just makes me more depressed, if anything. We don't need to blindly follow some South Australian fad that's popular this week. Do Gale et al seriously think that this is why people aren't turning up to games? If so, they've completely missed the point. We want less of this crap, not more of it. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

I disagree strongly with that Defender.
Winning would certainly result in some of the more fair weathered barrackers attending a few more games - but these issues are there for the rest of us regardless.
I use the Adelaide game at the G as an example (an example only) -
In poor form for a few weeks, down for a fair chunk of the game, we hit the front halfway through the last quarter, crowd goes absolutely nuts with a mixture of emotions - but that emotion lasted all of about 3 seconds until we were drowned out by the bloody "Loud-o-meter".
The following ball-up was performed by the umpire in near silence, where as the place should've been rocking!!
So this is something that we are/were all fuming about..... whist in front at the time, and still in the 8.
Nothing to do with winning or losing. _________________ "I am a great sage, equal of heaven.

Zero atmosphere from the Pies fans again last night, made all the more galling by the great show at the Hawthorn end. Do we have no floggers at Collingwood? And whose idea was it to wear the white skivvies? It only shows how few people are actually in the Collingwood "cheer squad". Let's face it folks, we haven't had a cheer squad since we left Victoria Park.
We have all hated the loud noise, the dancing boys and girls, the kiss cam and all the non-Australian additions to the game day experience.
But how come David Koch and Port can make things happen. Anyone else seen his initiative in having the whole crowd sing along to "They will never tear us apart" before the game? With skarves raised above their heads. And I mean the whole crowd (because at Port home games there are more than 50,000 Port fans). I wonder when the last time was there was ever 50,000 actual Pies fans at one of our games. There were 48,000 last night and 40,000 of those were Hawks.
But this group sing-a-long is Liverpool-esque and binds the supporters together. All our pre-game entertainment is doing is driving the fans away.
Come on Eddie lift your game. David Koch has left you in his dust.
Here it is. Look and weep.

Simple. We should have bought up all of Victoria Park and built our own stadium there (like Arsenal at Emirates or closer to home, like Geelong).
The MCG is homeground to nobody! _________________ Rain or hail, I wag my tail |

Yes. My seat has been vacant since we flogged the 'Aints. I just can't hack the pointless amplification. As a supporter, I feel quite irrelevant at the game, now. |

Except one of the key reasons we didn't develop at Victoria park is because we could not purchase any portion of the facility or gain favourable, guaranteed long term control. The portion of land was donated to the people of the area to be used as a public, open space reserve. |

As for King Monkey's comments, I agree 100%. The game is what we are there for and our game is more than enough to incite levels of passion that are not generated but rather prevented by loud music, voice overs, kiss cam, fireworks, b grade bands, dancers and broadcast fan noise.
Thank **** we don't have the screen telling is when to cheer yet like at Adelaide oval. |
