Topping up is only worth doing when you are seriously close to being a serious challenger. 2009-2010 was the pinpoint perfect time for us. Now? We look a bit further away than that and it may be too early for a top up. It may be better to take some more medicine and stick with the youth.
Being one of the bigger clubs and an attractive destination for FAs brings its challenges. Every year we'll have a few players knocking on our door. Sometimes though the prudent thing is not to answer. Continually bringing in new free agents is not good for any club. They are always overpaid, add to instability and take ownership away from the younger natives on the list, giving less opportunity for us to develop our own leaders. I think this year is one where it might be best to knock back any but the most irresistible FAs. |
Brilliant post IMHO. When the time is cherry ripe, try to recruit a mature player who will be the icing on the cake and the subtle difference between winning the premiership or not. Just like we did with Bally, bless him (and Jolly of course).. |

If we needed more experience, we would have kept one of the best leaders and most experienced players around: Luke Ball.
The reality is that we have more than enough experience already with Pendlebury, Swan, Cloke, Lumumba, Blair, Goldsack, Beams, Toovey, and Sidebottom all veterans of our 2010 premiership side. Throw in White and Young, who have both been around the park once or twice.
Now, cast your minds back to the year Scotty Burns retired. Many here threw their arms in the air and said the sky would fall. Wiser heads backed a young puppy known as Nick Maxwell as our new captain - and before too long Maxy was recognised as one of the best captains in the comp. And led us to a premiership.
Many of our kids have benefited from this year. Players like Keeffe and Elliott and Frost and Williams and Langdon and Witts have put a solid year in and will be all the better for it. And then there are the players who didn't get to play too many this year but have nevertheless grown with the young group of hard-working stars Buckley is moulding: players like Adams, Thomas, Grundy, and Broomhead.
Screw the experience thing. Our youngsters are great kids and they will do us proud.

We need to let leadership evolve naturally, I think our young backs were the feature of our year, sure the struggled at times but any back line would struggle under those conditions, we just need to get this bloody injury thing sorted.

And On Luke. I'm so glad we went to the game last night, every time he touched the ball the cheers went up. When he marked the ball in the 50, oh wow the roar. I was in tears. We were all willing him to kick the fairy tale ending, but I really didn't think he could do it. He just can't kick it like he used to. He can't chase, his body is saying no. A back operation to keep playing? That's crazy at his age with nothing left to prove.
He wanted to play on? So did Bucks remember, another time I cried like a baby. Sometimes we just can't let go. Sometime you just have to.
Watching Luke go out last night, I cried, I clapped, I cheered, I stood with the cheer squad, who last night were amazing, and listening to the the guys standing behind the bay, chanting Bally songs, it was just magic. The guard of honour, Eddie coming to talk to us and say goodbye. It was a magic ending.
Way better than going out, watching the new kids thrash someone, whilst you sit on the side lines, cold, sore, and knowing it's over, after a long preseason, and then saying a final sad goodbye.
Go out with something in the tank, go out with the army behind you, the army that stayed to the final siren, even though the game was gone at half time, the army that stayed because those kids, and a few old warriors didn't quit, an army that stayed to say one final thankYOU to an amazing champion.
Now let's take a breath, and give bucks a chance. The last few games, watching the kids run around, you have to be excited. They were not disgraced against a team that may well go back to back.

Very well said, nicely put, emotional, yes, its Lukes decision, not Bucks, some on here don't get that. He should not have to go thru a big Op at his age in footy, like Maxy, his body has had enough. I sure hope we keep him on as an Assistant or something, hes too good a Leader too lose to the Club, may well be a Senior coach oneday too.

Actually yes, I think that should be our top priority. And I'd like to know why we quit with the high altitude training in Arizona. Seems to me our boys didn't run the year out the way they have in the past, injuries aside. Or maybe our bad luck with injuries might have something to do with the fact that they didn't get the training they've had in the past. Just sayin...

So, are there ANY Senior guys, from other teams, you guys would consider, ala a Ball and Jolly (wasn't that a fantastic deal !).
OUR NEXT season starts next week folks, as Bucks said, and in recruiting we MUST hit the ground running hard, and get a break on these teams now distracted by a Finals campaign. !
