They where doing that at start of the Season and we won games doing that.
Agree taking Mumford out the last qtr was a big reason why we stole the game late |
You're probably right Dave but I can't remember seeing two legitimate ruckmen from the same team attacking the stoppages like that. If we continue that ploy & have any success from it they may well change the rules! |

What team could cover losing their best 2 big fwds and best small fwd...? add a two or three quality midfielders and the rest...!!!
As Bux noted you would not have thought a narrow win over the Giants would be worth celebrating, but given the tough couple of months with injuries biting so hard and the mounting pressure on our young guys this game was important and the gutsy win worth celebrating - any pie supporter would be happy with the effort of our young blokes to come away with a win! |
Cameron, Patton (big forwards; 2 best)
Callan Ward, Coniglio, Scully (quality midfielders)
Phil Davis (best tall defender)
Whitfield, Jaksch (couple of other early draft picks)
Giants have been hit just as hard if not harder. |
Reid, cloke -big forwards our 2 best
Beams, Adams - then swan, young and Caff on the night
Maxwell, Brown - defenders
Harry, Toovey, Elliot experience then - Oxley, Freeman, Scharrenburg some early picks and elevated rookie with high hopes.
So even then you pick a 22 and play against a 22 for 4 qtrs - except in this case it was 19 v 21 for 2 and a half qtrs.
AND the players coming into the team for their outs are all very high picks.
Theyre 2nds team sit top of the ladder for a reason. _________________ "Even when Im old and gray, I wont be able to play but Ill still love the game"

Well Knowing the Knobs at the AFL you Probably be Right.
Witts and Grundy would be able to hold the Number 1 Ruck Spot by themselves in the Future but be 2 or more years before that _________________ I am Da Man |

Cox and Nic-Nat.
But before that, just go back to the pre-Barrasi era, where you the ruck-rover was a ruckman. I doubt they did a lot of third-man-up in those days, but you certainly had two genuine ruckmen playing on the ball. In more recent years, most good sides (but almost never Collingwood, for some reason) have got into the habit of having a third-man-up player at a great many contests around the ground. Typically, this isn't a true ruckman, it's a tall midfielder (a Pendlebury/Judd type) or a tall utility (players in the Goodes/Goldsack/Maxwell/Goddard mould). It's uncommon for talls to play in the midfield but by no means unheard of. Recent examples include Pavlich for Freo, Goodes for Sydney, Richardson for Richmond, and Roughhead for the Hawks.
I think this is a very promising tactic for us. First, we have two genuine ruckmen and neither one is much of a forward (though that may change over time as they mature). Rather than play just one, making do with a pinch-hitter when he rests, or playing both from the bench, leaving us effectively a midfield rotation short, why not play them both on the ball?
Both are capable ruck-and-maul players, particularly Grundy. Both are big, strong lads who lay a serious tackle. This last brings me to another advantage of this tactic: our midfield brigade are nearly all midgets, or young and skinny, or both. Adding a big strong body like Grundy's to the mix helps make up for that. So, for us, it's a more attractive proposition than it might be for a club with big, powerful mids like (say) Hawthorn.
In the event, we were driven to this as a desperate expedient: with no-one on the bench v Brisbane, the "resting" ruckman had to play as a mid because White was at full forward and the one and only bench spot was reserved for the midfield smalls. Essentially, Witts rucked the whole last quarter and Grundy filled in for Swanny and 'Caff.
And it worked a treat!
I vote we do it again against Hawthorn. Let's see if their famous hard-bodied unsociable midfield looks so tough when it's up against a couple of genuine big men. I certainly know that I'd rather wrestle with and be tackled by a Thomas or a Blair or a Kennedy than by a Witts or a Grundy! _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |

I could Easily see Moore playing that Role as a Tall Midfielder as he moves very much like a Mid _________________ I am Da Man |

Finally watched the game. In the last, Blair, Thomas and Ramsay really stood up. Blair was involved in 3 of those 4 goals and was pushing hard for another as the final siren went. Ramsay's touches under pressure were exceptional for a lad who was having his first run. Very fine effort all around under very difficult circumstances. |

I can't stop replaying that game. Just a wonderful effort by the kids. Thomas was fantastic; Blair was the player I always hoped he would become - in the votes for mine - Goldsack was a monolith made of granite; Williams was in and under everything with pace and guts; Pendlebury played a great captain's game; Keefe and Frost were mobile and effective; Broomhead and Ramsey played well; Sidebottom did everything you could ask of him .... I could go on. Tremendous effort, lads, one of the great fighting Magpie wins. _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |

I would find a libba type less than 5 ft tall and make his task to grub the ball at the ruck, off the rucks tap. as all other players are tall, he would have an advantage. he would also have to have libbas mongrel streak. _________________ ___________________
