The Police are not saying the incident didn't happen they are saying they don't think there is a good chance of winning the case. Many people's thinking has been reinforced by this lack of heart by the investigating police. This happens over and over again and the perpetrators get away with it this is why the Milne charge is a good thing.
How many either took their own life or are thinking about it this week, how many people has this PR act by Bill indirectly encouraged to self harm?
It's just sad and he should step down NOW. |
Are you taking the piss? We have no idea whether this happened or not. For all we know it could be politically motivated slander. Are you seriously saying that a politician (or other public figure) should lose their job because of a mere accusation?
As for people self-harming because of Bill Shorten, I can just imagine it now: "I just can't handle the fact that a politician has been the subject of unsubstantiated rape allegations, so I'm going to go and slash my wrists." Do such people actually exist? _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

The police did not say: "We think he did it but can't prove it, so we'll let him off" which is what 1061 is implying.
The statement that, on the evidence, there is no reasonable prospect of a prosecution simply means that the evidence is not strong enough to take the matter to court. There is nothing in the statement to suggest that Shorten is guilty. These kind of decisions are made all the time, not every allegation of criminal activity is taken to court, there needs to be some substance to the claim. It's not the role of the OPP to determine guilt, so you can't read anything into the fact that their statement does not exonerate Shorten. _________________ Well done boys! |

I understand that victims can be "triggered" in all sorts of ways, but if that's what you're suggesting then you're way off the mark here: that kind of trauma could just as well be provoked by a media report or television show (or even a scent or an object) as a brief speech by the opposition leader. Even by this very discussion we're having here. To say that he should stand down because of what for all we know could be a vexatious claim is just breathtakingly bizarre.
Perhaps I should take your approach here and say "CBF". Perhaps there's no point arguing against an indefensible position. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

I heard at least 3 people who had been "triggered" calling into talk back radio yesterday. |

Whenever this kind of thing is aired in the media it is of course a possibility that other victims will be affected by it. That is no reason to accept every claim as truth, nor for anyone to lose their job over unproven claims, especially those that are not even considered prosecutable as in this case. _________________ Well done boys! |

they're still people. yeah, there's a special kind of desperation that spends the day listening to the AM radio talk back, but they're still people. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

I'm not really sure what 1061 is suggesting here though. Does Bill Shorten owe it to the public not to be accused of crimes he may well not have committed? Does he owe it to the public not to pass comment if he is?
I just hope that they never find themselves in such a situation. It can't be that great. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

IMO what bill did was selfish, he would have known the publicity he would be creating for something he was never charged with. I'd hope he would have realised himself or been advised of the adverse reaction others could have. Most of these others do not have any support structure yo fall back on when their memories come flooding back.
Shorten didn't have to say anything but he chose to open up. |
