Sad news this is I hope a tragic mistake by some idiotic rebels backed by Russia. Hopefully all those involved don't start the blame game and just get on with just what needs to be done.

Condolences to the friends and families of the passengers. A horrible tragedy.

Putin can wash his hands all he likes, but the facts are that without his government's support the separatists wouldn't have access to weapons on a tenth of this scale (if indeed it was a separatist missile, as seems almost certain). If you give heavy weaponry to untrained soldiers, you bear a good deal of the responsibility for what they do with it.

Another senseless shocker, though no comment on the politics as I don't trust any claims made in these situations.

BTW, don't forget to check your flight routes, folks; apparently, no one else is:

My sister in laws former housemate was on board. The mum of the girl didn't know it had happened until my sister in law called her to check if it was the flight. What a tragedy. Heartbreaking.

It appears the Russians have A LOT to answer for. They have clearly armed these blokes to the teeth.

ABC News 24 played audio of Russian separatists or whatever that are called saying they shot down a plane & found civilians 1/2 hr post the incident. To me this seems lock stock & dare I say barrel.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-07-18/malaysia-airlines-mh17-phone-tap-separatists-responsibility/5606578

Condolences to all involved.

just so senseless and tragic

3 Victorians named so far, a young Melbourne Uni Student and a couple from Sunbury, and how is the below conversation with the gentleman before he left:

The Risks have two children and have lived in the Sunbury area for more than 20 years.

A licensed real estate agent with Raine & Horne Sunbury, Mr Rizk has been involved with a number of sporting clubs while his son, James, plays for the Sunbury Lions Football Club.

James is currently the property manager at the Gisborne office of Raine & Horne.

A woman answering the phone at the Raine & Horne Sunbury office this morning said everyone was in shock at the news.

Weve been told they were on the plane, its just a terrible morning for everyone, she said.

Sunbury councillor Steve Medcraft said he was equally devastated to hear the news.

I was actually joking with him before he left asking him why he was flying with Malaysia Airline after the last missing plane, he said.

You just dont think that something like this could happen again.

No matter your troubles today, real or imagined.
spare a thought for the 298 people,
who simply got on a plane to go home, holidays, work...
and never made it.
don't glorify or dignify those responsible,
Lets save our thoughts & Prayers for the innocent victims.

What ever God or Religion they chose to follow,
if indeed, any,
May their journey be swift,
And may they now, Rest In Peace.

Peace be with you all xxx

You're kidding aren't you? Can't blame the Russians or rebels?

While it was clearly risky to be flying in the area, they were flying 1,000 feet above the any restricted zones...and any weapons equipped to go that high should not be in the hands of "rebels". Yes, questions should be asked, but to state that there is only "one mob to blame" is ridiculous.

People fight wars for perceived reasons mate, righty or wrongly the Russians rebels and Ukrainians all have their reasons.

Malaysian airlines was flying a passenger aircraft full of civilians 300 meters above the restricted zone, above an area of conflict, that = farken greedy and farken STUPID!

Airlines were warned off the area 3 months ago, some chose to listen some chose to run a risk...surprise surprise they all chose to listen after the incident and before Ukraine shut down the airspace.

If they'd listened first time around those 298 people would still be with us, end of.

Surely you are the one kidding?

The airliner was at cruising altitude. That's high. Shoulder-fired and portable SAMs need not apply. It was a big, serious missile, and the Russian-backed rebels are the only ones who have them.

And the fact that both sides have them and there's no invisible force field suggests flying in the area is dumb.
