Collingwood had had only two Premiership Captains in the last 56 years. That alone makes Maxy a very special footballer. He may not have been our greatest ever player but he is close to our greatest ever leader.

Thanks for 2010 Nick and good luck with your off-field career.

Thanks maxy. One of the greatest leaders that will ever captain this club. You'll be missed.

Two hundred gamer, All Australian, and Premiership captain. Not bad for a "good ordinary player". But of course, Maxy's worth to the team and to the club was much more than kicks and handballs and he will be remembered as one of our greatest captains.

A sad day indeed. Still age gets us all.

Well done Maxy. Thanks for the memories. Without your last quarter in the 2010 drawn GF that GF may have gone the way of others.

You will always remain a legend of the Pies, and nobody can take away from you the title - premiership captain.

Well done thou good and faithful servant.

Thanks for everything Maxy, especially 2010, and your magnificent last quarter in the draw.

Has always represented the Club with class on and off the field.

Legend.

Harry just put this on Facebook:

Quote:
I am going to miss the profound daily impact that Nick Maxwell has had on my life on and off the field.
I feel extremely privileged to have spent the last 10 years learning, developing, failing and succeeding side by side with one of the most exceptional human beings I have ever encountered.
Thank you for your selflessness, sacrifice and care. I have no doubt that people will be talking about the impact you have had on our football club 100 years from now.

Can't do much better than having one of your peers say stuff like that.

For mine, a bloke who extracted every last bit from his talent and body. A bit like Tony Shaw in that way but probably a better leader. Both had their roles in the team challenged but to use the old analogy both were blokes you'd want by your side going in to battle.

Onya Maxy, Premiership Captain and class act.

A good article. He definitely deserves more respect than he sometimes receives.

A sad day for the club but one that must be celebrated for what it is.
A premiership captain
200 gamer
AA defender
And a totally team oriented player
Will be sorely missed by the pies faithful
I had a sick feeling in my gut last night when I saw him in the moon boot and hearing 360 say if it's a season ending injury it would career ending.
Good luck Maxy I'm sure you will be successful in anything you do in your life beyond football.

... well, Bang, Bang, Maxwell Silverhammer ...

(Maxwell stands alone ...)

But I think that Baldrick got it right in his plaintive observation:

Well done thou good and faithful servant.

What i said after Anzac Day 2011 still rings true, so on behalf of Geek and myself, after a minor fender-bender with old-mate the Spaniard:

The captain needs to find form soon....

Jack, FFS mate. Remember, early March he was in hospital with bleeding from his kidneys. He wasn't in there for a runny nose...

Suffice to say he wasn't allowed to run or absorb any impact at training for how may weeks? So therefore much of the fitness he worked on over the summer had gone out the window?
Once presumeably recovered, and along with the pressure of being the captain of the reigning premier [and most impotant club in the land, Collingwood; also toughest job in Australian sport], then returned to a re-structured backline from 2010, minus all form and fitness?
And you expect him to simply produce 2010-like results immediately?
His 4th qtr efforts in drawn GF are the sole reason the 2010 cup isn't festering away in that shit hole rapist-academy in Linton st.
Or the reason many of us even give a shit about AFL in 2011.

So to summerise, Nick Maxwell's endeavour is not to be questioned again. Ever.
Rant over.

Thank you Nick Maxwell for giving all you had every single time you pulled on the black and white jumper.
Thank you for saving us in the 2010 GF.
Thank you for delivering the flag the next week.
Thank you for being so tough on your teammates.
And thank you for being such a good man to so many people off the field.

We couldn't have been prouder.

Nick Maxwell is a great inspiration to any footballer whose love of the game, willingness to work hard and long against the odds to compete and contribute to his team's success not only complements but exceeds his innate talent.
How good must it feel for Nick to be able to reflect on that and as a result know that his name and deeds will be talked about for a hundred years and more to come?
End of an era.
