Up yours, John Wren, up yours with a fishhook-stffed franger if that's your go. I'll do as I like with my profile thankyou very much, and leave it to you to figure out what it means (if anything), assuming you can crawl out of your cavern of cluelessness for long enough.

you are not my friend. paint a rainbow on your house. fill your boots.

I got called narrow minded and not in support of gay marriage and got put in the 1950's category because I didn't change it.

Unfortunately the original post has been removed (I went to copy it here), but it went along the lines of:

'90% of people on my list have now changed their profile pic to rainbow and I notice about 10% haven't, I wonder why and what that says about them'

I responded with it, I support it but I don't see the need to change my profile pic because because everybody else does. It doesn't mean I support it any more or any less.

Then the abuse started. Being called narrow minded... saying I'm stuck in the 1950's... saying people who don't change their profile usually are associated with people who don't support it and usually on their lists will be 90% of people who don't change it and I wonder what it says about them.

Strewth!

I'm usually for a fad... I've got iPhones, iPads, iMac, Apple TV, Macbooks and I can't wait for Apple Car Play to his Australia.

These are the people who claim to be 'tolerant'. What you're seeing is a religious style "Burn the Heretic", but in the absence of religion all the fundamentalist nutjobs need something else to persecute people for.

If you didn't tell them to 'Go **** Yourself' then you're a more patient man than I am.

what i have noticed of late, more and more, is that if you don't publicly (on fb and similar mediums) support the prevailing view you are considered to be against it.

That's what happens when persecution of people in reverse starts to occur and the likes of Peter Hitchens (Christopher's younger brother) have mentioned this in the past about this very issue. Because people may be against legalising gay marriage, abortion, euthanasia or any other social issue related to morality for that matter doesn't make them less entitled to an opinion than someone who's in favour of such practices of occurring and witnessing outright bullying on social media and news blogs about this recent issue with marriage in the last day or two has been nothing short of a disgrace.

I'm actually astounded but not surprised at the same time that people on Facebook are hassling Brenny over not complying with most Facebook users of using a rainbow profile picture. First off what business is it of anyone else to start hassling people about whether they're in favour of gay marriage or not, or implying that an absence of a rainbow profile image means you're against same-sex marriage.

I'm firmly with Wokko that marriage shouldn't be defined by the government and it should be left up to the individual to conduct his own marriage in a private setting without government intrusion and where people are truly in control of the institution of marriage and what it means to them personally. The fact that these lingering issues and debates about gay marriage still exist is because of the government intervention of the institution in the first place.

WOW. So much negativity in a thread that really should be about tolerance not only for members of the LGBT community, but also those who support in whatever way they see fit. Whether that's marching in parades, signing petitions or changing their Facebook profile pic to include a rainbow.

Not everyone who believes in equality needs to do something about it. But don't judge people who do something, even if it's really probably ineffectual to the cause at the end of the day.

Every single one of my LGBT friends on Facebook has changed their pic. And many have posted thanks to their friends who have too. Including my sister. I didn't change my pic as a stunt or to be a sheep. I changed it to show the people I love that I support them. So say what you want, that's all that matters to me. And them.

This BBS needs a like button. Just one would do. Put in Mandy's post above so I can click it.

(PS: Not gay and I don't have any particular friends who are gay. But that's neither here nor there.)

It's just stripes on the profile pic though, I put the. On mine. One of my best friends son is gay, he and his partner of 5 years hope to marry, also another old work friend, he and his long time partner would like to do the same.

Seriously, why not? Every one has a right to suffer

I've no issue with the profile pictures, the thing I found amusing was on celebrity and band pages the complaining about them supporting this and pride month.

I am happy that same-sex couples can marry, it'd be good if Australia was able to allow it too. I don't see the big deal about it not being legal, it's been legal in Canada for the last decade and the world hasn't ended, and it's not changed much in the world.

Just seems like petty crap really.

But Jezza, that's awfully convenient and one of the biggest reasons Libertarianism is considered a public relations cover rather than a serious perspective by many.

The only way we can test your sincerity on that is to check if you're actively rectifying government intervention regardless of personal inconvenience. Where are your campaigns in that regard? Have you told folk around you that you're actively seeking to annul their state-endorsed marriages? Will you seek to have your degree annulled on graduation because you genuinely do believe government ought to play no role in setting such standards? And what about fossil fuels subsidies? Unaccounted for environmental externalities? Anti-competitive government asset sales with profit and expense guarantees? How vocal are you when powerful interests who can hurt your hip pocket are involved?

Okay, there's a yawning gulf between what you just said according to the Libertarian playbook, and what you actually believe. That's fine—we all stand guilty of that one. But, in the present context, the corollary is that in effect all you're doing is hiding behind the received cultural form you inherited, canonising it, and hollowly claiming to have some greater principle in mind.

You're usually a thoughtful lad; whatever you do, please don't join the club of reactionaries who define their beliefs according to how irritating others are. Yes, there are all sorts of mindless leftists. But, be careful: Their pseudo-socialist rot is no less convenient, no less hypocritical, no less theoretical, and no less utopian than what you've just said.

Keep the focus on the broader world whole, Jezza; it helps keep any single idea from turning into a brain-colonising monster!

Wowee golly gosh, that's not quite what I got out of jezzas post.

Jezza I hope your parents weren't offended when you denounced their marriage! Oh wait, why would you as a normal, everyday kid who grew up with the same rules everyone else did!

The point I got is we are all entitled to our opinion, and friends should not try and force you to "show your colours" and then, if you fail to comply, hound you, or bully you, for it.

I have friends on both sides of the coin, some who are very aggressive about their belief it's wrong. I don't particularly want a shit storm over something That I know neither side is going to bend on. What is the point of it? If you can't have friends who have different ideas to you on some things, well gees life would be boring. I respect their standing, as I expect them to respect mine. I reposted the news without comment, I changed my pic, no big deal. If I did get someone starting a fight, I'd do what I did last time a squabble happened on my page, delete it!

Life is too $£$%^%%$ short, live and let live.

Mandy, excellent post.

we all judge. we're all judgmental fukks in some way or another. we only have to revisit the bali nine executions to see how judgmental people were.

many people were/are being genuine in their support of the u.s. supreme court ruling but i can bet you london to a brick there are just as many who jump on a bandwagon and don't really understand why or what they are supporting. one must be seen to be doing something lest they be judged as apathetic or an opposing force.
