Geez Hal, you were paid good money not to speak of it again.

This woman has no backbone whatsoever considering she had three years to repeal the Marriage Act when she was the Prime Minister even after her party's platform on same-sex marriage changed in December 2011.

Is this the same Julia Gillard who said prostitution comes in the form of marriage! Rolling Eyes

Quote:
"Prostitution takes many forms and is not only the exchange of money for sex. … Prostitution in marriage is the transaction of sex in return for love, security and house-keeping."

A plebiscite? Surely Tony jests. But really, I reckon he knows exactly what he's doing. This is the best way for him to keep the issue on the backburner while minimising damage at the election. Hopefully people will see through it.

This plebiscite idea is looking stupider every day. Now a number of conservative Liberals are saying that they'll ignore the result and vote against it anyway.

They're entitled to do that, of course. But WTF is the point of having a plebiscite then? We already know that the vast majority support it. Do we really have $160 million lying around to flush down the drain?

Ah well, at least somebody's benefiting from it.

Come on Malcolm. End this silliness now and bring on the parliamentary vote.

Good Lord, did she really say that ? "The transaction of sex for love". What a strange, cynical view of relationships. And what a strange, weird view of love.

A parliamentary vote will bring no change. Any polly with a significantly catholic muslim , (insert what you like) will vote against it. Simply have it as a referendum agenda , The WE can vote. If it is beaten so be it. Like the euthanasia bills if it can be overturned, A referendum can not.

^ Nice in theory, but impossible. A referendum can only be called for constitutional matters. There's no mention of marriage in the constitution, so nothing to hold a referendum on.

Research from Marriage Equality suggests that if a free vote were held in parliament today it would either pass or come very close. There are plenty of MPs and senators on both sides of the house who are already publicly in favour of it.

Interesting if you could measure whether "support" has actually grown or whether the people who have an objection has lessened. That may be the same thing in the end but is a different attitude to the subject.

I would fall in the latter category. I used to be an opponent but now I think it's inevitable and no longer have any objections. So while I'm not a passionate advocate for it, I'd vote for it at a plebiscite because I no longer believe there's any reason to say no.

^ I think that's a very common view, Stui. Most people just don't care and don't see a good reason to oppose it. At this stage it's really only hardcore religious types and perhaps a few old fogies who are passionately against it. In that respect the shift in public opinion in just 10 years is incredible.
