What's the deal with the .mkv format? I'm looking at some stuff and it's all in .mkv which means it wont play direct on my TV.

WTF is wrong with .mp4 and .avi?

I think video in the .mkv format is in a much Higher Definition (720/1080p)

Doesn't matter to me how HD it supposedly is if i can't watch it.

yes sitting 2 feet from the 20 inch monitor and PC sound system is not bad, but I'd still prefer the couch, the 50 inch and the surround sound.

.mkv is container rather than a format, it lets the file contain multiple audio and video files so things like extra soundtracks for 5.1 or subtitles can be included. Most newish TVs or Blu Ray players with USB input will play .mkv files (My 5+ yo old plasma would play them).

I'm sure there are also tools to convert mkv to avi/mp4 but I've never needed them, so you'll have to look into that yourself.

I have trouble burning .mkv to disc too. Very annoying. Give me a low quality .avi with matching .srt any day!

The biggest problem with .mkv files is the little buggers sometimes don't want to be deleted off your hard drive.

Other than that they can be excellent and deliver movie files of excellent quality in far smaller file size than .mp4 or .avi can produce.

Most play on my blu ray fine though you get the occasional one with some exotic codec within it that wont/

Stui any video converter make an excellent freeware version that will convert .mkv files and many others to one that will play on your machine.

People still burn files to disc? Thought most people had moved on to digital only these day - considering the cost of cheap file players and usb sticks.

I still do. My old tube TV doesn't have USB capability, and my new external hard drive doesn't seem to like Lola's monstrous LCD. Plus, did I mention I'm a Luddite? Wink

I do. I download Vids from Youtube then Convert them to VCD. Then Burn them onto a DVD so I can watch them on the TV
