I was a bit worried when I saw this comment but he didn't apologize and stood by his comments. Good on him for speaking truth to power, even if it cost him professionally (maybe, was probably due to retire anyway).

I’ve sometimes thought of Newman as representing the quintessential Australian approach to politics: not very well-informed and proud of it, opinionated, angry at everything and an incessant moralist. He really should be our PM.

^^ Must agree, David.

In an field over-populated with wankers, Newman still managed to stand out.

Channel 9 has instantly become better; good riddance to the misogynist oxygen thief.

What Sam said:
He has been in jail five times, he held up a pregnant black woman with a knife, he's a drug addict, he's a crackhead and he's a porn star," Newman said.

"He's dead because of the police brutality and it never should have happened,
"But I am telling you who George Floyd is, now they've made a monument about him and he's a piece of shit."

I love Sam! I don’t always agree with what he says, but at least he says what he thinks

Well, he certainly does that – to an extent. For instance, what he’s trying to say here is that this guy had it coming and blacks, who he generally views with contempt, are protesting for nothing. But he’s careful enough to not just come out and say that, and instead has chosen to explicitly focus on something as irrelevant as George Floyd’s character as a way of distracting from the obvious issues. A career on Sky News After Dark beckons.

well we are reading between different lines because I don't read "he had it coming" at all, I read it as "HES DEAD BECAUSE OF POLICE BRUTALITY, AND IT SHOULD NEVER HAVE HAPPENED" which is, you know, exactly what he said, and hes totally correct.

and then he says "and now they've made a monument of him, and hes a piece of shit" I don't see any contempt for black people, and I don't read he had it coming, what I read is this is not the poster boy you need.

the rest you made up from previous thought you have had of him, from other situations. you know, just as your pointing out George Floyds character is irrelevant.

We know what Newman thinks of non-white people; look at the Nicky Winmar incident from years back. There’s a reason why he feels the need to say this now, too.
