Another night of football is about to commence as we're nearing the conclusion of the first set of matches for each group and we now enter the beginning of the second set of matches in the group stage tonight as Brazil and Mexico take on each other in group A, but first up we have the first group H encounter involving Belgium and Algeria against each other with Belgium expected to be a surprise packet in the World Cup according to many including myself and then Brazil and Mexico take on each other followed by Russia and South Korea in the other group H match to conclude the matches for today.
Belgium v Algeria - Group H
Brazil v Mexico - Group A
Russia v South Korea - Group H
After these matches have been played, I will post up the ladder of each group stage as all teams will now have played at least one match in the World Cup so far. _________________ | 1902 | 1903 | 1910 | 1917 | 1919 | 1927 | 1928 | 1929 | 1930 | 1935 | 1936 | 1953 | 1958 | 1990 | 2010 | 2023 | |

Brazil has real problems up front. Neymar is a clever player but lacks the strength to dominate physically ands simply doesn't have the bag of special tricks of a Ronaldinho or a Messi. 0:0 against Mexico was a fair result but I saw nothing from either side to suggest that it could go all the way. I suppose Brazil could come good - or just stand up better physically as the wear and tear of the month takes its toll on other teams - but it really needs a striker to step up - Fred and Jo were both ineffectual today. |

Just quietly, Russia could probably use an actual goalkeeper. |

Tonight we have three matches with first up being Australia against the Netherlands in a David versus Goliath encounter in group B. Following that we have an angry Spanish team up against Chile and to round out the day a must win clash in group A takes place between Cameroon and Croatia.
Australia v Netherlands - Group B
Spain v Chile - Group B
Cameroon v Croatia - Group A

Great goal from Cahill but unfortunately Australia couldn't get over the Netherlands. Still, 3:2 was a creditable result against good opposition, although there were plenty of chances for the win. Meanwhile, it looks like Spain will be propping up the group, eliminated, unless they can somehow come back from a 2:0 half-time deficit against Chile. Before this tournament started, who'd have thought that Australia might be a serious chance in their third group game against Spain? |
