Smith is reasonably accurate but he just doesn't present much of a down-field threat at all (no gain of more than 20 yards today) and, with Charles well held (only 35 rushing yards), the Chiefs really didn't look like a contender.

Wasn't there a stat pulled out during the broadcast that Smith had just one completion over 20 yards for the season? Even more of a problem, no TD catches to wide receivers for the whole season.

Also saw the comeback by the Chargers against the Ravens, great rally. Watched highlights of the Raiders game, beyond abysmal for Oakland, incredibly poor on all fronts. Giants are in such massive freefall at the moment, even losing to the Jags, who did it with a couple of defensive scores from atrocious New York ball protection.

There may have been, bm - I wasn't watching live - just following on the "gamecast" - it's amazing how descriptive that is. Looking at Smith's stats, his longest completion this year is 34 yards.

So, the free to air games this week are Steelers at Bengals, Seahawks at Philly and, I presume, New England at San Diego (although I can't confirm the last, yet, I believe it's the scheduled Sunday night game).

And, in the ESPN power-rankings, I see the Packers' season going awry, now that they are ranked number 1 - we know how well that ended in 2011.

So far, the Steelers have torn the Bengal to shreds in the second half to win 42:21. The Jets and the Vies are locked 24:24 playing OT, the Giants pumped the Titans 36:7, the Panthers will trounce the Saints (41:10, 2 minutes to go), the Ravens stormed back over the Dolphins to win 28:13, the Colts are pressing for the game winner against the Browns, the Lions accounted for the Bucks 34:17, the Rams held Washington 24:0, the Texans beat the Jags 27:13 and in last Thursday's game, Dallas beat the Bears 41:28.

And, in a late update, the Vikes just took it 87 yards for the game-winner over the Jets. And the Colts are 1st and goal on the 1 yard line.

Indy got the TD but couldn't make the 2 point conversion. They lead the Browns 25:24, 32 seconds to go for the Browns to pull it out of the fire.

Seattle and Philly have just started. Chiefs lead Cards 7 to 3, Bills and Broncos are still no score and the 49ers have just started their win against the Raiders.

So, Indy25, Cleveland 24. And in the later games, 24, Bills 17, Seattle 24, Philly 14, Arizona 17, Chiefs 14 and - horror of horrors - 49ers 13, Oakland 24. Patriots at Chargers just underway.

14:13 Chargers ahead of Pats at the half. The Chargers' punter is out of the game, so Rivers had best score every time (Novak, the kicker, sent his only punt so far about 27 yards). But for an interception at the opposition 3, the Pats would have been ahead at the half. However, they've wasted 2 chances either side of halftime to take control of the game (a 3 and out on the restart was the other).

It has been an arm wrestle since half time but the Pats look to be easing away, now. They lead 23: 14. About 8 minutes to go in the last. Chargers about to get the ball.

Steelers looked great in that last quarter, but equally the Bengals just can't seem to put it together when it matters. Saw a good part of the Chargers game, their defence battled hard but got no help at all from the offence.

Interesting to see that the 'let's have a team in LA' talk is apparently gathering momentum, again. From what I can gather, it seems to the Bolts, Raiders and Rams being looked at hardest. Even the NBC play call team mentioned it, which I thought was interesting.

The Pack hung on to win 43:37. Their defence stank today.

Carolina's season just got startlingly worse. Best wishes to Cam Newton for a speedy recovery: http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/12004613/cam-newton-carolina-panthers-involved-car-accident
