Give all of the fat people cigarettes, guarantee in a few months they will be well on their way to being skinny. Then when they die suddenly the medical cost is minimal and we have solved the cost issue.

Problem solved.

...yeah.

That's a very poor argument. His explanation for prejudice against obese people is an attempt to rationalise something far more instinctive: our tendency to dislike people who look different.

With racism, we override that because modern Western society tells us that it is inappropriate to dislike someone based on the colour of their skin. We suppress it (and in a multicultural society with somewhat diverse media representation, ethnic diversity becomes the norm). It wasn't always this way, but ethnic prejudice has become a very strong taboo.

Contrast this with weight prejudice, which is not only partially tolerated in our society, but actively encouraged in some sections of the popular media. Of course many of us look at obese people with displeasure and dehumanise them. Some people not only fail to suppress that disgust, they actually construct narratives in order to justify it (e.g. fat-shaming is good for public health; fat people "only have themselves to blame", etc.). I suspect Rogan is one of those people.

Health is a real smokescreen here. Most of us don't actually care about the health of others, not that much. If you come across a person who's anaemic or has high cholesterol, what's your reaction going to be? Are you going to overlook them in a job interview or not cast them in your TV show because they're not sexy enough? Are you going to make disparaging comments about them to your friends later, or bully them at school? No, because you don't really give a shit about their health problems and don't really have that much of an urge to give them a lecture about personal responsibility. You don't find yourself irrationally hating them. As long as they look relatively 'normal', they can be part of the in-group.

As for "thin privilege"—yeah, this kind of identity politics Tumblr-speak is pretty cringeworthy, but it's an essentially valid concept, isn't it? Of course people with conventionally attractive figures are privileged in pretty much every way possible in our society. You may have noticed that. These American buffoons can snigger all they like about it; if they find the bleeding obvious hilarious, then I have some good jokes about the Earth revolving around the Sun that they might like.

Being a former fat bloke, I'd like to weigh in (hahahaha omfg)

I managed to shed a sizeable amount of weight by exercising and eating slightly less food.

Don't believe people who tell you that it's 'not their fault' that they are overweight. If they did what I did and they don't lose a shit ton of mass, I'll eat my hat.

And the beauty of it is I'll eat that hat and continue to lose weight! My diet is $£$%^%%$ awesome!
