So, one week you play for 4 points and the next week for 2 points??
Huh??
If one team has a slightly easier draw one season, how about - bad luck!!
You might get a strong team in a form slump and/or a weak team on a high, what are you gonna do then?? Ask the weaker team to stick to the form guide????
No point trying to micro-manage an uneven fixture to make it more "fair".
Swings & roundabouts - nobody wanted to play St Kilda 3 years ago, now we'd love to play 'em every bloody week!!
If sticking with a 22 game season, the only logical solution in my eyes is -
Play every team once, then each club plays their 5 biggest rivals, and/or 5 closest neighbours in return fixtures. The teams you only play once alternate home games from year to year.
This way you maintain traditional rivalries, maximise attendance & revenue, and mitigate the travel factor in the last 5 rounds.
No brainer for me. |
If you play a team twice, those fixtures are for 2 points per game. Can fixture whoever you want against whoever. Everyone plays for the same amount of points in a year, so where is the problem?
As per your suggestion, every year we play say Richmond, Carlton, Melbourne twice because they are geographically close. If they are hopeless over 2-3 seasons, it is a big advantage for a club to get to play them all twice. Under the system I have raised we are really no better off than playing strong clubs twice.
Inevitably the strongest couple of teams play off in the GF, but the draw can be a strong influence on the makeup of the finals and top 4 and the system I have raised/borrowed virtually eliminates much of the advantages of an easy draw. _________________ One team, one dream - the Pies and this year's premiership |

Broadcasters won't pay up for that. Need to be commercial in considering it. _________________ One team, one dream - the Pies and this year's premiership |

So, you play the unbeatable reigning premier twice, they flog you first time around, then unbelievably beat them in the second game. You belt out the song like never before! A win for the ages!
Then you open the Sunday paper to see you've only earned 2 points on the ladder...........

I can't see how it would really make a difference because some teams would still have more single games against weaker opposition than others. _________________ He's mad. He's bad. He's MaynHARD! |

Oh, I'm fully aware of that. I'm just saying what the right way should be from a fairness perspective. _________________ Est. 2002 |

Ive said this for a few years now.
Interstate teams and Geelong, play them once
Melbourne teams play them twice
Melb teams twice equals 16 games
Interstate once equals 9 games
alternate each year with interstate clubs about travel.
So it gives you a 25 game season and you can knock off a final or two and the nab cup.
It gives some sort of familiarity which you can stick by each year without
having prejudices, just do it Andy and you can thank me later. _________________ Carpe diem quam minimum credula postero. |
