Post subject: Pick the better backline | |
|
Toovey Keeffe Maxwell
Langdon Frost Fasolo
Or
Williams Brown Schareberg
Seedsman Reid Sinclair
Now that Williams is free to play it got me thinking about how the missing players from our back line make up arguably a better back line than the one that played North. In a week or two this whole 'missing' back line will be available apart from Scharenberg. It's also amazing how many of our current makeshift back line started as rookies or were overlooked by so many Clubs. It is quite remarkable really.
So which is the better back line?

Why are these the only 2 options?

I would have a mix thanks
Tooves is always in the back 6. - Frost is looking the same!
Maxy is there until others force him out...
Fas and Reid are better up the ground
Keeffe needs to learn to play forward and add an extra dimension to his game as per Reid.
Langdon has been good but Williams and Seedsman offer more.
Clearly plenty of depth down back.

"Back six" is an outdated concept. These days we play a back seven. For mine,
Toovey, Keefe, Williams
Fasolo, Frost, ?????
Maxwell
Scharenberg is likely to be a long-term member of the back seven, possibly replacing Maxwell for Season 2015. Meanwhile, the last spot is between him, Sinclair, Oxley, and Langdon. Seedsman would take either that spot or Fasolo's except I have the Seed marked down to play on the wing with Sidebottom on a HFF. Reid is full forward, Brown swaps around with Keefe and Frost depending on fitness, form, and matchups.

the good old "plus one".
the defence, for mine, is a combination of eight to nine players when you take into account the midfield running back.

^ Yes. Sidebottom in particular seems to have started making himself useful back there.

What about Broomhead? He was looking good early in the pre-season and I think they like him on a back flank.

The one led by Brown is the better defense.
The good thing for us is that the alternative backline is doing very well. Part of this is because we never really had a settled back 6, it's a work in progress. The best part of it is that we have 4 tall defenders that all seem capable in the key posts, where someone like Hawthorn are struggling to find one.
If we do ever have a full list to choose from I'm thinking Brown and Frost will be our talls and that Reid will play up forward. The only thing needed for this to be a no-brainer is for Frost to use the ball more. He'll never be Reid in that respect, but does need to do more if he's to play alongside Brown.

I'm leaving Reid out as we want him playing forward.
So, from that 11 people the best back 6 is:
Sinclair Brown Frost
Toovey Keeffe maxwell
Scharenberg hasn't even fronted for the VFL team yet, he's got a lot of work to do before he pushes an incumbent out.
Langdon, done good, held down the spot, not in the first team at this stage but hasn't done anything wrong.
Fasolo. Love him to bits and the way he's working down back is brilliant. Wouldn't drop him, maybe push up to a wing of HFF, either way he's damn close to being a first pick in the 22 somewhere
Williams. Has to get fitness and form working now his court case is over then start pushing. Did some great work last year in the absence of Tooves, but Tooves is back.
Seedsman, this kid has so much potential it's scary. We wouldn't lose much slotting him in but I can't see him at this stage being able to force any of that back 6 out.
To consider, as tannin points out, we usually play with a back 7, that puts Maxwell as the spare, I'd have Fas in there just ahead of Williams at this stage.

How bad is the look every week of players bending over to get through rather than busting through as intended?
They started out as streamers on the race for finals.
Then a banner instead for the end games,
Then it morphed into a banner every week which gave the cheer squad a focus.
Now it is used as a club endorsed ad and is ignored by fans and players alike
Except if used occasionally.
Like on occasions like Anzac Day.
Still got a place but just every now and then... |
That was random

All these threads that mention Scharenberg on any best 22 or back line etc mean Jack ATM. The kid hasn't played a game and until he does he earns a spot like anyone else. Plenty of 1st rounders don't make the grade for whatever reason. By the same token a Jack Frost type pops up and surprises us all. None of us thought Maxy would be in anyone's calculations preseason either.

I was a big fan of him early on, but he's been ill and injured for so long now that I have more-or-less got over my disappointment and forgotten about him. He looked like a real prospect, but he really needs to get fit, get in form, and get into the senior side to show what he can do. Of our vaunted three-in-a-row early draft picks (er ... 18, 19, and 20 as I recall) Grundy has been great, but Kennedy hasn't really got what it takes (in my opinion - others disagree) and Broomhead is unsighted so far. Not all that great a result. Am I too impatient?

Our back line consists of more than the 6 named. Our best back line rotation on a game day would include the following:
Brown/Frost (or both if 3 talls), Keeffe, Fasolo, Toovey, Williams, Sidebottom, Lumumba, Maxwell, Sinclair/Young.
Reason i have Young or Sinclair is i havent seen the output i expected from Young just yet, to me has to keep Sinclair out of the side but thats just my opinion

I'd rather play Hawthorn without Gibson.
