Don't agree when considering the circumstances. In most instances he would have been charged with assault. If Marley had shut his mouth until he had legal representation he may never have been convicted.

If he gets more than 6 months it will be a farcical joke considerIng recently a footballer from one of WA clubs got jailed for 6 months for same offence and his was a premeditated assault unlike Marley.

A. Reasons against Marley going to prison:-
1. The act was spontaneous/not premeditated.
2. He was provoked.
3. Although he pleaded not guilty, he has still shown "remorse" by doing substantial community work.
4. Given his support systems(mainly CFC) his prospects of rehabilitation are excellent.
5. He has no prior record.
6. He has already been "punished" in the sense that he hasn't played any football this year.
B. Reasons for Marley going to prison:-
1. The jury obviously didn't believe the provocation story.
2. The injury(jaw broken in two places) was severe.
3. A message needs to be sent to the community that young men can't just whack people and expect to get away with it.
C. My prediction:-
It would be nice if Marley got a non-custodial sentence. A sentence wholly suspended and further community service would be nice, although the prosecution might appeal. My guess is that he'll get one-three months prison time.

worth noting that while he pleaded not guilty to GBH he did plead guilty to common assault.
Fingers crossed there is no prison time.

Williams is due to face the District Court in Perth at 9.15am local time (11.15am AEST) before Judge Julia Wager.

The judge's sentencing remarks could last an hour or more.

Collingwood footballer Marley Williams is expected to be sentenced for grievous bodily harm in a West Australian court today.

A jury convicted Williams after a four-day trial in his home town of Albany, on WA's South Coast, in February.

The 20-year-old defender admitted to punching Matthew Robertson, then 29, outside an Albany nightclub, breaking his jaw.

Williams argued he acted in self-defence.

The AFL player said he had punched Mr Robertson in the face outside the Studio 146 nightclub, but it followed an altercation inside.

Williams said Mr Robertson and two other men had previously attacked him inside the club, and he feared being "beaten up" again outside.

However, he admitted he did not mention self-defence during his police interview following his arrest.

After Williams was convicted prosecutors indicated they would seek to have a jail term imposed for the crime, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years behind bars.

Williams is due to face the District Court in Perth today

I think it will be over within 30 - 45 minutes, the judge is hearing another case at 10AM WA time

Great link....the heavy hitters (no pun intended) are out giving Marley character references currently.

The prosecutor in summing up says marley was motivated by revenge when leaving night club, my question what would be seeking revenge for. The victim in this case may not appear to be 100% innocent,

prosecution having an each way by the sound of it.........

This "Prosecutor says victim Matthew Robertson had done nothing to indicate he was a threat to Williams at any time that night"

then this
"Prosecution says Williams was motivated by revenge when he when downstairs and left Studio 146"

Revenge for what then?
