Post subject: Training report 18th AprilReply with quote

The glorious autumn sunshine intermittently kissed upon the training track of the gods and the boys did the weather justice with a sparkling display in the track.

One gets the sense that the players respect the reality that we have world-class training facilities and their efforts today honoured the venue provided.

Pendlebury seems to be growing in the captaincy role: he is not as vociferous as Maxwell, but can clearly be seen moving around the group with, what appears to be, words of encouragement. There is a very positive 'vibe' amongst the group, it would seem. Unfortunately, Pendles wasn't there this morning.

No hoodies, long white socks with headbands or any hint of hubris: some might add, cynically, that there is no premiership medals for over half this group either, but I am firm in the belief that this will come.

The young players impressed on the track today. Perhaps they were inspired by the statue of Lou Richards, or the growing belief in what Bucks and co are building, but there was a genuine pep on their step.

Hudson is an excellent mentor for both Witts and Grundy. It is clear that these two lads train as they wish to play. The emphasis today with Grundy was on body position at ball-ups and throw-ins. Body position in the sense that each player would try to optimise impact on the contest without conceding a free.

There were no Richmond onballers at training, and, subsequently, there was no one crying over 'missed' free kicks.

If Swan is still injured it is hard to see. He covered the ground very well. If on-ball divisions were compared to Formula One racing teams, he and Pendles would be Red Bull. Followed by the BMW team of Beams( naturally) and Sidey who put on a great show of ball-winning on the track today. For those who disparage this lad, consider the reality that he is still quite young and was third in our B& F in 2013- respect!!

For the Gault-haters, be patient. He is a much stronger unit in 2014 and is less easily pushed off the ball. I understand that he played forward in the VFL last week and, I consider this, to be his best position. This boy was a gun midfielder at age sixteen, but had a growth spurt where he grew over ten centimetres in six months which means he now stands a tad under 200 cms.

Scharenberg moved with apparent freedom and his capacity to drill the ball low, fast and with some penetration reminds one of a former number five at the club. He allegedly possesses elite decision-making capacity which, when coupled with his disposal by foot, will make him quite a weapon.

The main emphasis of the session seemed to revolve around winning contested ball and feeding off by hand or foot as quickly as possible.

Young and Witts walked laps in runners.

Swanny left the track early.

My youngest daughter was a close observer of Reidy who spent the session doing run-throughs up and down the wing and she described his running form as, "delicious!!".

Beams was a no-show.

The session was very relaxed relaxed today.

However, mY heart was gladdened by what I saw, with injured players stepping up and young players working their butts off as they sought to impress.

I still believe that this will be a 'development year' for the boys, but am fortified by what I saw today to believe, authentically, that the club is heading in the right direction.

There is nothing better than being able to see the boys train first-hand; I am blessed!

God bless Collingwood.

^^Maybe Gault's trying not to focus on goal kicking so he can get a game. Seems to be a requirement.

Great report WL. I'd actually thought Gault was no longer on our list, I need to be paying more attention to the VFL Embarassed.

if that were the case, i'd have him at the g tomorrow, deep in the forward, in about the spot where the old full forward position used to be.

Just about the most poetic prose ever to introduce a footy story

Mr Think Better,

Thank you for your kind praise. Coming from Estonia as a child made it tough at school, but I was taught this beautiful English language by several kind nuns at primary school.

Being at our training ground this morning inspired me to write such things. I am glad to give an update when I can. Not everyone can get down to see the boys- I'm happy to report if and when I can.

I just hope they share a little of our club with our wonderful fans.

Gault is a clay formation of stiff blue clay deposited in a calm, fairly deep water marine environment during the Lower Cretaceous Period

im a Sidebottom sceptic, sorry Lad.
as a perennial and rigid/believer in every thing black and white
i don't think he finds enough of his own ball. Evil or Very Mad
he glows when the system works but when the going gets tough i wish
he could stand up and show some leadership.
there were glimpses last week but we did win it early on.
sorry
