The Pies had a fair offer on the table for most the year which Daisy refused to accept.

With the injuries, Pies pulled that offer and replaced that with a more performance based contract.

Pies were being prudent due to their medical concerns re his ankles.

Fact that Carlton was prepared to pay massive overs for a player who, for the past 2 years was ok at best, says more about them than us.

For Daisy, I guess the answer was simple, guaranteed bucks v gambling that you overcome your injuries.

Probably easy in hindsight.

At the right price, we would have kept him, but a first round pick made the decision more palatable.

Welcome to free agency. there will always be some desperate team to pay the overs and discipline will be needed to ensure you don't damage the prospects of the team.

Pies were smart.

daisy had no choice.

Amazing that anyone could continue to argue that we should have kept Dale Thomas after the last game. Question
He has lost the passion he had with us. He looked a shadow of his best which culminated in best Norm Smith votes across both Gfs in 2010.
Because of that he'll get no boos from me. I just hope he goes ok from here on so he can somehow justify the huge cash each week, except getting thrashed with his team against us each time, just like last week...

Well, It's come down to a simple argument about whether Daisy was/will be a gun player, that and whether the 'succession' was a mistake of massive proportions. No logical arguments, just gainsaying, and accusing me of the very things I'm copping! I never suggested anyone who doesn't agree with me knows bugger all about footy, I clearly quoted the post with about 4 factual errors in a sentence or two, meanwhile my sanity is put in question time & again for the sin of not agreeing with the rabble, and worse, my passion, how do you rationalise that? The last thing I am though, is bitter. This pas de deux, (OK, occasionally a pas de dix) is quite relaxing & often hilarious. As for "Getting on board" How many times do I have to repeat that our only option at this point is to stick with Bucks and hope he becomes as good a coach as he was a player? (I did call for Eddie & Bucks to go for a couple of days and gave very valid reasons for that stand, but though those reasons remain, the moment has passed, as we are too far into the season for a destructive board spill). We need to get behind Buckley now, and pray that the amazingly talented list we have, thanks largely to Hine & Co, can keep us competitive while Bucks learns to be the leader we need.

This however doesn't change the central facts of the matter; the strict adherence to the original succession plan was a mistake of monumental proportions. If we manage to navigate our way back to real contention after 2 seasons as "also rans" that doesn't change the past. That's just illogical! If it had been suggested 2 years ago that a 'rebuild' was necessary, and that short term pain would be our lot, we could have accepted that, we are after all Collingwood supporters! But to talk about rebuilding 2 years down the track is just plain disingenuous. We were told to expect a continuation of the incredible success brought about by Malthouse from 2007 to 2011. To blame him for everything including the 1915 loss to Carlton after the fact is similarly nonsensical.
This was interesting though:

Your writing is anything but convincing. The truth is that you're racking up logical fallacies as if you were writing a 'how not to argue' paper for year 10.

Hmmm, Why weren't such fallacies and logical flaws named or qualified? Failing that this last sentence basically amounts to "You're wrong!" Surely the most basic rhetorical 'fail' possible!? It's also a bit poor to suggest such a thing without acknowledging the dozens of logical errors heading my way. Can you look up 'Ad Hominem' for me?

My previous post outlined my points extremely clearly, but no one attempted a refutation, perhaps because one couldn't be formulated. Simply saying "You're mental" is NOT a logical refutation! Those who still don't remember, or refuse to remember what a great player Daisy was/is can only quote B&F stats, and suggest that he "wasnt that good". It simply doesn't hold water. If it did there would be posts here from 2010/11 complaining about the guy's effort, they exist for just about everyone else on our list!

The great thing about his work, especially his last couple of full seasons, was how great a foil he was for the sheer fluency and silk of Pendles, Swanny, Beamer, and Sidey. He was not just an "outside mid", he was a flashy & spectacular player who could pull off the seemingly impossible and change a game. The greatest sides in history have all had them. With Daisy & Dids we had two, guys whose highlight reels will be shown in perpetuity. From day one Daisy was taking hangers, kicking impossible goals and jumping about like a crazy person, an inspiration to his team. Around 2009/10 he added being a desperate, hard-running possession gatherer to his game, causing him to be named among the games very best by a lot more people than just me. Try to remember (or better still go watch) his performances in the big games, especially finals. "Ordinary" players don't get chosen as the best player across two grand finals, and two final's series. Don't forget he was our best even in the disappointment of the 2011 GF. Think about the pinpoint passes to someone in the goal square, his sprinting ball chase, one handed pick up and goal against St.Kilda, his 50M boundary torp which turned the 'G on it's head in the amazing 80 point turnaround against Adelaide in 2011, his 3 goals in 3 minutes against Richmond in 2012 to change an ordinary game in the 3rd (it became the first of 10 straight wins after a flogging by Carlton and the loss of Bally for the season), and if nothing else, his best afield against StKilda in his last full match in Black & White. Do you really not believe he could've provided a spark in our last 2 games last year when we just stopped playing after 3 quarters?

That he was a great Collingwood player simply isn't up for debate.
Whether he was worth 300K, 500K, or 700K can only ever be a personal opinion, as is what constitutes 'overs' or 'unders'. (The fact that Tom Scully earns more than Swan or Pendlebury proves that)
Whether he wanted to leave to play under Mick is nothing but conjecture from every one here. I'm very happy that I know the truth, so your guesses move me not one iota.
Whether he will be a great player again for Carlton, only time can decide. Saying he is "washed up" at 27 is an illogical prediction into the future, which is as far as I know, a power no one has ever successfully managed. Players simply don't just forget how to play at that age, it's more often when they peak. The only thing likely to prevent a return to form is further injury, which after 8 rounds shows no sign whatsoever of appearing, in fact he's one of only 8 Carlton players to play every round this year. Sure, he has a way to go before he returns to his awesome best, most, myself included, thought it would be mid-season before that happened. So let's just let time decide that one & enjoy Carlton's uselessness while it lasts.

Meanwhile we have the best list in the game, (although appear to be doing an eerie exact repeat of 2012, losing Rounds 1 & 3, but winning the rest.) As usual we had a damn tough draw to start the season, and still haven't put 4 quarters together in a game. Our twin machine guns Swan & Pendles, appear to have overcome shaky starts to the season by their standards, and young players like Langdon, Elliot, Marley, & Frosty are starring in their positions. Even experienced guys like Maxy, Steelo, and Goldy are having standout seasons, and big "Reg" just keeps getting better with every game. Added to that we have a shorter injury list than at this time the last 2 years, and 'depth' players like Kyle Martin, Paddy Karnezis, & Ben Kennedy are taking names in the magoos. Bitter? Me? When Collingwood is winning? Not even possible!
If we manage to produce our best footy for the whole game at some stage, we will be a truly scary prospect, damn hard to score against, and damn hard to keep from scoring freely. The next few weeks will certainly tell us a lot. We'll need to put together good games over the next two to put Adelaide & West Coast aside, but they're vital games to win as we play these sides again near the end. After that we have a bunch of teams we can beat with two great quarters, before the big tests against Hawthorn & Port. Winning those would see us on top of the ladder and short-priced flag favourites, but we haven't beaten either for a while, so it would certainly shake-up the football world, and probably cause some kind of freakish response from the AFL. At this stage though it's looking good, for us, and shitty for Carlton & Essendon, the world is as it should be, and I for one am enjoying the ride. If Daisy stars for Carlton I will be pleased, especially if they stay at their end of the ladder. I dislike it intensely when Collingwood people decide an ex- player (or worse a current player) is evil, or was always a dud, if he changes teams. For me, anyone who bleeds for the Black & White jumper, even once, is a hero, regardless of future behaviour.
The tradition, history, and performance of Collingwood Football Club is one of my great passions in life, and for the most part it has been the players who have provided those unrivalled moments of both pleasure & pain over 40+ years. If it costs me time and costs you boredom or frustration that I will always defend those guys against any & all, then it is a very small price, and ain't gonna stop anytime soon.
The options are simple, read, ignore or study engineering.
I ain't writing for you. I have a difficult & specialised (though hugely rewarding) full time career, and writing this stuff is cathartic & relaxing for me.

That engineering degree might just come in handy! Give it some thought!

Sorry 35Forever, Applied the 2 paragraph rule again...

I did however just watch the last qtr of the 2007 QF v west coast and the extra time on my new DVD (thanks again for the tip DTM...absolute bargain) and gee Daisy was bloody good when it counted. What a pity for him and MM that neither will ever see finals again.

Forever35 I love your passion and dedication to your opinion. Unfortunately I don't concur with much of what you are saying.

How I see it is as follows.

The board saw a brighter future with Buckley at the helm than MM. Now I'm not saying this was 100% correct but if MM had honored his word and the contract he signed he could have still been a vital part in the club for another 4 years whilst assisting with the education of Bucks. MM wanted control in the coaches box on game day (this he stated in his book written by his daughter) to which Bucks replied he wouldn't be in the coaches box on game day. If he had complete control in the coaching box on game day then he would theoretically be the head coach not coaching director.

Dale Thomas was a very good player at collingwood nothing will ever change that. He is a premiership player and will always be in the team photo holding the trophy which will never change. But he wasn't and never will be a super star along the lines of Swanny or Pendles.
The facts are simple Dr Peter Larkins stated the injury Thomas had had 2 courses of action which could have been taken (2 different operations) under the guidance of our medical staff they chose a course of action that hasn't returned him to his former mobility, speed, gut running or ability to leap (all of which) were his weapons.
As his rehab unfolded CFC realized he would need more time and quite possibly a further operation (according to Dr Larkins) it's scare tissue causing issues that needs to be removed. Dr Larkins stated if he had it removed he would be out for 12 to 16 weeks which is basically another season lost.
With the information at hand collingwood reduced its offer to what that thought to be fair. I'm not saying it was or wasn't but in today's football it makes perfect sense not to tie up too much capital in 1 player at the expense of the clubs long term future. I believe the 2 year offer was one year for the operation and recovery and the second year to prove he was back to his best.
Now at 26 with 2 seasons of injuries and not playing to the high standard he had in the past getting a 4 yr offer on elite money was too good of a offer to turn down. I can understand that without question. I don't think anyone on here would turn down a chance to earn twice as much money each year for twice as long as the other offer in there day to day job which what AFL is to Thomas.
If we look at clubs like Carlton they have experience in paying overs for players on the hope they play like world beaters and seldom do.
I honestly don't think he will ever be the same player he was and that is a shame in a lot of ways as he did magical things on a football field.
The upside for us was cap space and a high pick so it's a win win. He got his money and security and we got cap space and a high draft pick.

Yeah na.
Hine has just said the whole coaching staff lead by Bucks were doing a fantastic job developing these kids he has picked up. Find it difficult to understand the argument that essentially bucks is no good as a coach and we are traveling well on the back of recruitment, yet the players highlighted as performing well have been developed by the coaches.

Daisy at his best was great. Just not better than pendles and swan nor more important than cloke. Not only that, under bucks for a number of reasons he was simply not "bought in" ( and the reasons are many including his loyalty to Mick) on that basis I don't care who you are you have to go. Especially someone with such a strong personality as Daisy.

In the end, I'd rather pay more to a bloke like beams who leads by example off field and on, is hard working when fit or injured, and while certainly an individual character is a fiercely loyal clubman.

Daisy might well be worth 700 next year in carlton a list.
Certainly not in ours and to get a pick like freeman or scharenberg - well talent alone was just not enough to keep him.
