Well saw Twice a Pie Player run down a Bombers Player but for only to be called play on.

So how is that not holding the ball with Prior Chance?

Part of the rule states that if the ball is knocked clear in the tackle then the player cannot be penalised.

Consistent rulings across the game, we got away with a few as well.

Gotta agree with Dave on this one.

Who the hell knows why it's paid or not?

i am about 99% certain that the rule was clarified over three years ago to say quite clearly that in circumstances where the player has prior opportunity to dispose of the ball, the player, if tackled, must dispose of the ball by legal means.

In other words, prior opportunity, overrides the rule you are referring to.

I would be hgappy to be proven wrong, but i am with Dave on this one. It is the one rule interpretation that pisses me off more than any other. If you get run down and you dont handball or kick, its holding the ball. That is what happened to Harry in round one against freo even though the ball was knocked lose.

I will say that on at least one of the run downs this weekend, the tackled player did do a dinky handball which probably saved him.

Your spot on E right down to the dinky little handball that unfortunately cancelled that decision, but it really bewilders me otherwise.

Perhaps someone can educate me further because I just don't get it no matter who I'm watching let alone the pies.

This new rule was brought in to apparently reward the man going for the ball, however twice Essendon players were swung 360 degrees and were able to play on. Last weekend Elliott ran down a North Melbourne player, no free kick.

Last week also Collingwood were not penalised twice as they were not todays well. Plus I am also not a fan of how long the ball is held in for before a free is awarded.

It seems to me that the umpires have stopped paying holding the ball at the stoppages so much that it's translated out to around the ground - ie. the run downs which really should be paid. I don't mind if they don't ping a guy when he's got 4 players on top of him but when a player is run down he should go.

The only frees for holding the ball they paid yesterday were to the pies and the scum didn't have any prior - baffling decisions. They were about the only frees we got that weren't play on to advantage!

Someone has to say it!

Money talks and gets frees the way they umpire it's the only explanation.

I feel you have to get over the umpiring and start pointing the fingers at the coaching. At the moment we have many AFL teams playing junior football. Wherever the ball is that's where all the players are. How many times do you see a vacant half end of a ground?

I am all for getting stuck into the umpires but they make mistakes just as players do. My feeling is it comes down to 3 umpires with 3 different interpretations so the consistency is never going to be there.

Back to the rule, if the ball spills out in a tackle then it's not holding the ball. Give Wayne Campbell a call, he stated the same thing on 3AW. Prior opportunity is the interpretation and this comes down to a decision by decision basis, the umpires get it right 80% of the time. We seem to focus on the 20%.

spectators no it, the players no it and the footy department no it.

all that is Collingwood must continue what is happening on the field
and that is 100% unrelenting pressure on the opposition ball carrier.

the players atm are winning the 4 points and knowing that there will
be no reward with a free kick for incorrect disposal, holding the ball,
for a Collingwood player and the frees that should be paid to us for
blocking, tackled without the ball [see Witts 1/4] and so on…………….

Collingwood must carry across the line each week for a win with the
knowledge that there will be no advantage giving to us on the field
by the maggots or anyone else. its there for all to see and will continue
forever and ever.

you also need to add that a player can make a "genuine" attempt to get rid of the ball. there was a decision in the demons game in the alice that was used as evidence to support this.

i don't care too much if they don't pay the frees so long as they are consistent and in keeping with the spirit of the game being played. i wonder how mcburney would cope this year if he was still umpiring. it'd probably give him a nervous breakdown. i wonder how chambo is copng.

I can never understand why bogans call "ball" as soon as a player is tackled.

Thought yesterdays match was umpired fairly.
It was consistent and we had a few player tackled and we got away with it.

Expecting a free whenever a Collingwood player tackles someone and screaming protests every time a Collingwood player is tackled is not logical.
