We won't be paying him $800k. But unless he's adamant he wants to play for Collingwood and only Collingwood, we will be overpaying him. That's just the way free agency works. There will be other clubs in the market for a KPD who are more desperate than we are. Hawks for instance.

What can Frawley do that Frost can't?

Mark the ball. Kick slightly better and play forward. Most importantly, he is stronger and a better one on one defender.

Just as long as we have enough cap space to make a decent play for Danger next year, then I'm all for it. I still think our midfield is our weakest link.

The midfield's the easiest and quickest line to build from the draft though, and we have a few relatively high recent picks.

It is inserting I mentioned a while ago would be interested in him. It seems he is leaving Melbourne but for success not money.
The $800K ws trumpeted by his manager to pump up his price. He won't get a 7yr deal anywhere. The way I see it is as below.

1 Do we have cap space ? Yes and no really. We cleared the deck with Jolly, Dids, Johno, Shaw, Thomas and this year Maxy retires Hudson is going and more than likely Lynch. But we would need money aside for some upgrades for Frost, Langdon plus Beams is off contract next year. So I'm guessing the max we would consider would be around $500k.

2 Does he fit our needs ? Again yes and no. Yes a key defender with experience and a big body would be great but he isn't a superstar by any means. He is a decent player but not in the class of a Scarlett or alike. Being able to play forward is a bonus. Losing Maxy having experience down back would be handy but Frost has shown he is no mug and hopefully Brown gets back to his best and we do have Reid as well.

If we can get him on our terms and price then sure do it having depth in the back line is a huge plus.

If he comes with Paul Roos as coach then it should be a done deal. Wink

Not sure why the Pies would be targeting Frawley, our defense this year has been excellent and we've unearthed some real tall talent in both Keeffe and Frost with both improving with more match experience. Add to that Brown is still to return meaning next year we'll have Brown, Keeffe and Frost with Reid as the swing man, and Marsh and Scharenberg as a developing back man and Moore drafted into the side as another capable swing man.
Why spend the coin on another tall defender when we're already loaded at the position and will need the coin for future contract extension.

The Age today almost rules him out from being a Pie because we don't have enough cap space.

Frawely is a very solid player. But not worth $700k+. He'd be a handy acquisition, but paying overs for him has strategic problems later. That is my major concern. Better off holding on until the right player is available maybe next year.

Geez Robbo form the Hun is saying he's all but packed his bags for Collingwood, while The Age is reporting we are well and truly out of the race.

What to make of this...
