Hey I don't appreciate being called silly when I am doing something no other member of my family is prepared to do even for a day. The carers payment is not the amount you state, and it really isn't enough to compensate for being out of the workforce, no super, etc. My only option for more than a few hours respite is to put my relative in a nursing home and that would not help him at all. As I am qualified and until six months ago worked in the aged and disability care sector I know how pathetic the pay rates can be.
It could be argued that the low status of carers whether paid or unpaid adds to the stigma of mental illness which is the topic being discussed.

Sorry $884.00 per fortnight ...... when I was on the carers pension I admit I was able to do a few cash in hand jobs to get by. As for family not helping for some reason it's just what happens most of the time isn't it.

You got it right with that last line the value put on carers is pretty low in this country and I can't see any pollie prepared to do the right thing by us.

Have you looked for the Commissioner?
The Vic one is totally independent and gets things done, most case managers shit themselves once the commish is on their case.

Mate you deserve a medal. I know what you mean about other family members not doing anything, and you stepping up. I promise you, when it's over, you will hold your head high, and know deep in your heart you did the best you could. Even those small things you will see and think why didn't i do that? It's ok. You live with it. I do. And it's easier. I don't know that they will ever get it. And that's ok too. Looking after my Mum fighting her battles, I'm proud of it, I'm at peace with it all. I miss my Mum every day, but stuff happened at the end, stuff that was only for me to experience. Amazing, life changing things. I am grateful every day. And I know, Mum was too. Good luck mate. Your relative is very lucky to have you. Xx

I am glad I have some training and some good support from the medicos and home nurses. My bro is defying the odds at the moment, having the odd setback and then bouncing back. It's all good. Thanks for your concern and good wishes.

So I've been advocating the death penalty by various means and degrees for years for pedophiles, then I read this, and I have to say I take my hat off to this brave kid, his amazing mum, sorry, mom, and I guess I see things a little differently now. (But not for those that, um, don't fight it, or "choose" the evil path)

Well I'll be. Upworthy was actually good for something! Shocked

Seriously though, thanks for the link. I think this bit says it all: "they were expecting lots of hate mail for this episode. So far, they have received none." It's not that people who talk about this sort of thing are saying anything particularly controversial; they're simply opening up on a taboo subject that nobody else wants to talk about. When expressed like this, most people end up agreeing with them.
