No joking or mucking around, this to me shows the reasons why we went to Afghanistan and why these mofo's need to be exterminated.

They've done it using captured materials provided to locals to fight against them, plus they've looted the weapons stockpile made available after the fall of Gadaffi in Libya.

Clumsy Western attempts to "exterminate" people we don't agree with is the reason scum like these exist and prosper. Every time we go in and "pacify" somewhere, we create another million or two embittered refugees and victims who will dedicate their lives to ending our lives.
With that said, it is no surprise that these scum have targeted Timbuktu. Timbuktu has a very special place in Islamic cultures, something like the place that Rome or ancient Greece has in Western culture - it is the seat of learning, of wisdom, and of piety. By sacking Timbuktu and destroying its priceless historical treasures, these scum can make their intolerant extreme version of religion the only one left.
Something very similar is going on in the United States and here in Australia, where we are seeing the ignorant, intolerant religious right destroy all that is good and civilised about their side of politics and their sort of religion. It is not so spectacular, but in the long run may prove to be even more harmful.

Give up, Stui; you were wrong then and you're wrong now. It was a monstrous debacle and no villainy you care to jump up and down about after the event will re-write that. Even worse, you've basically just reported the stated objectives failed dismally without even noticing.

So the fact that the execution (no pun intended ) of the ideal was less than perfect means the ideal wasn't right?
You for one have argued the exact opposite in differing situations.

The fact it always had zero chance of working and a very high chance of being a catastrophe ought to have at least made you sceptical.
But then you would've had to have done due diligence before forming an opinion to be aware of that; i.e., studied interventions in the region going back to British imperial times, as well as the geographic, geopolitical and socio-cultural complexities of the countries concerned.
Certainly you should have already known that US-led interventions at the best of times have a high carnage rate, and that at least since Reagan US interventions have been nothing but wanton resource grabs (being generous with history). And even not knowing that you surely want decent leaders in times of war yet it was plainly obvious that the US government was led by an incompetent moon bat backed by corporate crooks in the energy industry and underwritten by widespread Islamophobic hysteria.
And then like anyone believed the projected costs and withdrawal times. I mean, seriously.
If none of that sounded the alarm bells then nothing would've.

Historically Afhganistan is like Vietnam, no invading force has ever been victorious.
However, despite some of the rhetoric, we didn't go in as an invading force like the Russians and others, we went in to get rid of an evil regime and install democracy.
Despite all the fails, the number of children attending a school has increased dramatically and the percentage of females at school exponentially. Surely that lands in the win zone?
the taliban won't lie down quietly, why would they? They have an agenda to send the world backwards 1000 years with them in charge.
these £$%$ers are seriously dangerous and need to be treated as such. Ordinary people, which includes the majority of muslims, don't want a bar of these scumbags, yet they proliferate.
You can never wipe out an idea by military force, but you can wipe out enough of the people who carry the idea to make a difference. narrow ideals don't survive that well.

Very disturbing. What can be done in this situation? I suspect military intervention would be a disaster, and sanctions only further punish the country's citizens. Covertly supporting a civil uprising might be a slightly better option, but a civil war is bound to create widespread carnage.
I guess there are no easy answers to this.

Got it in one, David. Indeed, people who can read have already learned that this present disaster grew out of the military interventions in Libya (by proxy) and the Middle East (direct).
Look at it this way: what are the Muslim fanatics praying for most? Western military intervention. They desire and need and trade on Western military adventurism the way that a card sharp trades on greed.
Meanwhile the well-meaning but very ignorant pro-war party continues to ignore all the evidence and pleads with our leaders to keep on scratching the scab until it is all better .... or until we pass out from loss of blood and treasure, whichever comes first. You guess which is more likely.

Of course being a sworn atheist means I don't care if the muslims or the christians win. I think they're both wrong, and quite deluded, even brainwashed.
