Depends on the coach.
Some place great stock in a match-winning centre half back.
How was Brown not drafted as a defender?
There's never been a premiership won by a team that didn't have a rock solid defence.
I wonder if after kicking 9 goals in a GF and losing it anyway, Gary Ablett snr. would subscribe to your policy of throwing your leftovers down back.
I will back Bucks and Hiney thanks

Reminds me a bit of Matthew Pavlich as he can play Up Forward,Down Back and in the Midfield. Simmlar Height and Play on Medium and Tall Players and play as a Medium or Tall Player

Presti was drafted as a CHF
Reid was drafted as a forward
Peter McCormack was a 100 goal FF for Assumption College
Bill Picken was a CHF
Wayne Carey played games at CHB under Pagan in his early seasons.
Defenders can be made, good forwards can't.

"Shazza" played most of his junior career across HF or the midfield didn't he? I think it's just the new fad of having a good rebounding half back line, you don't put your stopper there anymore, you put your line breakers. The old wingman.
You don't get picked as South Australia's best player if you're a spud.

^^Mostly half back and some forward. Not too much time in the middle.
But you're right. He's not playing as a lockdown defender, he's playing the sweeping counterattack role. This is more like a winger than a key defender. And in the modern game it's more important than it has been in the past. He essentially played the Hodge role and no one would question whether Hodge is a match winner.
I agree with the questions on him to some point. To the point that if he were a defender and could not really play anyone else, then he'd not be drafted at 6. This is clearly not he case though. He's a utility and can play back, forward and midfield. He probably needs to work on his tank to become a permanent mid, but there's little doubt from anyone that he can play there.

He is Capable of Shutting Down his Man but that is not his Strength

So glad the 5 clubs ahead of us were stupid enough to overlook him.
Give me the talented tall of Scharenberg over the talented small in Kelly, Billings and Aish everyday of the week.
Bontempelli at pick 4 comes with far more risk attached.
Not sure why there seems to be an air of doubt from some over his ability or worthiness to be taken at pick 6.
This kid will be a star able to fill holes that need filling all over the ground in years to come.

2 Reasons I have heard.
1 - His Feet Injury
2- There where some Reports that he Might have a "Go Home" Factor about him. Though they said that won't be a Problem at Collingwood

Even if Bucks is well liked, you cannot judge or say how much you do like your coach until you play under him.

I won't argue with that.
I have always seen the biggest difference between backs and forwards coming down to personality type.
You can make a defender as long as you have the character traits to work with.
The suggestion however is that you have your best players in the middle and the forward line, and the leftovers down back and speaking as an amateur football coach that's a great way to get your arse kicked.
Dane Swan, Scott Burns, Marley Williams, Brad Hardie - all back pockets who were turned into midfielders.
You need something special to be a great forward, you need a spark but that doesn't mean you shouldn't spend quality draft picks on quality defenders.
Goddard and Hodge do not prove CCCP's point - they were not turned into what they are, it is their style and Scharenburg looks similar. The only way you get a player like this is by paying the price.

I sense that Collingwood rated Bontompelli slightly ahead of the Iceberg, but getting our 2nd preferred player at number 6 is a great outcome. By all accounts, he's ready to go (once his feet have recovered), whereas Bontompelli is more of a project player.
Overall, I'm very pleased with his selection, as our defence needed an injection of class, especially with the loss of Heater. |
