Worst cover of a song ever?

Someone mentioned Olivia Newton-John's name in another thread. That brought to mind the following obstacles to musical enjoyment:

I'm not actually up to burning the "E"s in my CD collection, yet - but I have them out and noticed that Melissa Etheridge did a cover of Refugee (from Damn the Torpedoes by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers). There's a degree of hubris in opening your "Greatest Hits" album with a song like that.

On the positive side, of course, as Johnny Loftus' review of the album on AllMusic says, 'Actually, this collection could consist of "Bring Me Some Water" 17 times in a row and still be awesome'.
